Franco Morbidelli makes his debut in WRC at the ACI Rally Monza with WITHU and Hyundai Rally Team Italia

21.11.2020: The exciting 2020 season of WITHU and Hyundai Rally Team Italia is not over yet and is all set for a great finale. The forthcoming ACI Rally Monza is the closing round of the World Rally Championship

The exciting 2020 season of WITHU and Hyundai Rally Team Italia is not over yet and is all set for a great finale. The forthcoming ACI Rally Monza is the closing round of the World Rally Championship that will get underway on December 3-6 in Monza and for the occasion one of the Hyundais i20 R5 will be driven by Franco Morbidelli, the Italian rider contesting the MotoGP World Championship with PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team and wearing WITHU Motorsport colors.

This extraordinary participation will celebrate an incredible season for the Italian rider that has claimed three victories, one second-place and is second in the MotoGP classification this year, when only a few hours are left ahead of the closing race in Algarve. Morbidelli came to the fore for his speed, precision and wit increasing his prize list that already included the European title Superstock 600 2013 and the Moto2 title secured in 2017.

WITHU and Hyundai Rally Team Italia joined forces this year to finalize Umberto Scandola’s WRC3 program and pushed hard together with Hyundai Italia, to allow the participation of Morbidelli in the ACI Rally Monza following the successful project “Riders meet Rally” that kicked off last June at Ciocco when all the WITHU Motorsport riders challenged themselves in the world of rally behind the wheel of the Hyundai i20 R5 prepared by the team of the Scandola family.

Morbidelli’s participation in the closing round of WRC will continue along the same lines of that experience, even though for Franco this is going to be a real debut in a rally that announces to be technical, challenging and definitely exciting. The event will be very different from the Monza Rally Show that took place over the past few years, and will follow an itinerary that meets WRC standards in terms of mileage (272km competitive) and layout.

ACI Rally Monza will unfold with a program split in four days partially based within the Autodromo Nazionale and partially in the hills around Bergamo. Ten stages will take place at the Temple of Speed, while six of the seven stages on Saturday will be completely off the circuit.

The race will follow the rigid protocol to face the present sanitary emergency, but will enjoy a wide media coverage that will allow all the fans all over the world to follow the racing action as the drivers will go through these tests for the first time ever. WRC+ All Live will show all the stages live through the streaming service, RAI Sport (CH 58 Freeview) will provide several connections with the stages and all the italian sport networks will cover the race from Mediaset to SKY and all the other specialized networks.

Franco Morbidelli
PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team rider

“I am electrified by the chance of taking part in a real round of the World Rally Championship. This is going to be an amazing chance to be among the best drivers in the world and compete in a different sport.

This is going to be good fun though, I will have to learn quickly a lot of details and it is not going to be easy to adapt to two added wheels in such a short time. When Matteo Ballarin called me I did not think twice about it. These are chances that happen a few times over a lifetime. I will follow a crush course from Umberto Scandola to reach the first test as ready as possible”.

Matteo Ballarin  WITHU President

“The rallying season has been quite fragmented this year, but when Riccardo Scandola and I started thinking about the chance to take part in the ACI Rally Monza we agreed to ask Franco to join the team. WITHU and Franco have been partnering for a few seasons now, he is an amazing boy and we always worked very well together.

This year we had an electrifying season, we shared the joy of every victory and overtaking and therefore, as WITHU, we thought he deserved this seat. I would like to thank PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team that supported this idea since the beginning”.

Riccardo Scandola  Hyundai Rally Team Italia Team Principal

“ACI Rally Monza is probably going to be the most followed moment of the whole WRC season and a historical moment for this discipline. Our program in WRC with WITHU changed often due to the reasons that we all know but ending the season in Monza also with Franco Morbidelli in the team is going to be extraordinary.

We are working hard to allow Franco to get some confidence with what is going to be his office for four days. His approach at the Riders Meet Rally has been very analytic and precise. This is going to be a big challenge for the whole team, but I am pretty sure that it will also be good fun”.

WITHU is the commercial brand of Europe Energy, a European group active in the market of electric energy and natural gas specialized in training, consultancy and direct sale of electricity, gas, fibre-cable internet and mobile communications. Smart MultiUtility Company is active in the Italian and international retail market.

The core business of the Group – electric energy and natural gas trading -- is the highlight of the company that in the past twenty years has built a logistic platform capable of delivering energy everywhere in Europe, from Albania to Bosnia Erzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia.

WITHU started a revolution that places electricity, natural gas, fiber internet and mobile communications in one single platform. The customers that decide to subscribe this offer can opt-in for one or all the services, customizing their package as preferred.

The advantages, from an organizational point of view, will consist in lighter management of utility bills, as clients will only have one contract and only one document summarizing all their services, one commercial contact point and one App or reserved area to manage all the utilities.
