The 2007 GP2 Series season reaches its climax this weekend at the Ricardo Tormo track in Valencia. For Racing Engineering the race has special significance as it is taking place in Spain, the team’s home ground, in front of their sponsors and fans, further adding to the importance that is always attached to the last meeting of the season.

All of this means a bigger responsibility but results in an even greater commitment to do well from all the team members in order to end the year with a great result. The outcome of the third GP2 season for Racing Engineering’s is already very good with just the final date at Valencia to go.

Three wins, a second place, a fourth and several point scoring positions have propelled its number one driver Javier Villa to a place among the top stars of the championship in only his second year in the series whilst still the youngest driver on the grid. Javi has shown that the confidence shown in him by Racing Engineering and its sponsors Repsol and Telefónica was based on the hard reality of the young Spaniard’s great skill and he is someone who faces a brilliant future.

The excellent results achieved by Javier so far this season allow him to arrive at Valencia in the fight to finish in the top five of the series, he is already second in the number of wins this season behind the championship leader, German Timo Glock. Whatever position Villa finally achieves, his season can be already be described as superb, so both driver and team arrive at Valencia looking for a perfect ending to a year already full of highs.

As well as Javi’s success, Racing Engineering is proud to arrive at the last race of the season, in Spain, with a 100% Spanish driver line-up. With Marcos Martínez joining the team in the final part of the year, yet another young and promising Spanish driver arrives via the F3 program of the team directed by Alfonso D’Orleans Borbón , reinforcing the wholly national character of the Sanlucar de Barrameda base.

Marcos has been showing great adaptation to the great step-up in driving the Dallara GP2 car amongst the tough competition in the F1 feeder series. At Valencia, a track he knows quite well from his time in the Spanish F3 and FJunior series, Marcos will be able to focus on setting good times from the very beginning instead of having to expend valuable track time in learning the circuit, so he will have far more chance to shine in front of his home crowd.

The last GP2 series weekend of the year is also special because it’s the only one where the category gets central focus instead of playing second fiddle to F1, with which it shares the billing in the other races. This means several changes in the usual GP2 race weekend scheme as the main interest will be concentrated just on Saturday and Sunday, with qualifying due the morning of the first day, and the feature race in the afternoon, while the season will close on Sunday at midday with the sprint race.

All this on a track as technical as the Ricardo Tormo’s circuit, located at Cheste, quite close to Valencia, and with a layout featuring plenty of slow corners with very different radii. It is a track where overtaking is really difficult so getting the best possible starting position will be key to fighting for the top positions.
