Clean sweep for Renault Sport
Created by Renault Sport for customers competing in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC), the Renault Sport 2 WD Challenge has underlined the full potential of the Megane R.S. N4 and Clio R.S. R3, which have shone throughout the 2011 season. Renault Sport took the honours in the centenary running of the Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo and in the six asphalt counting towards the Renault Sport 2WD Challenge, chalking up seven wins with six different drivers.
Staged over six of the asphalt rounds on the IRC calendar, the Renault Sport 2WD Challenge provided a new stage for Renault Sport’s customers to compete on. For each race win in the front-wheel-drive category, drivers collected EUR 10,000 in vouchers for spare parts, with second- and third-placed competitors picking up vouchers for EUR 5,000 and EUR 2,000 respectively.
Victorious at Monte Carlo (a non-Renault Sport 2WD Challenge event), the cars making up the Renault Sport range swept the board with wins in Corsica, Ukraine, Belgium, Czech Republic, Hungary and Italy. And as well as a recording a one-two in the Belgian leg, Renault Sport filled all the podium positions in both Corsica and Italy.
Notching two wins, a second and a third place, Stefano Albertini brought his talents to bear at the wheel of both a Clio R.S. R3 and a Megane R.S. N4. The Italian picked up EUR 27,000 in vouchers in total, while French duo Pierre-Antoine Guglielmi and Jean-Michel Raoux both walked away with EUR 12,000. In all, vouchers worth EUR 81,000 were presented to seven drivers.
The IRC season comes to a close with the Cyprus Rally on 3-5 November, with Albertini leading the overall IRC 2WD Cup standings on 83 points, 13 clear of Jean-Michel Raoux. Whoever comes out on top will receive a cash prize of EUR 25,000 from Renault Sport.
Dominating the front-wheel-drive category were the Clio R.S. R3, which has proved its potential time and again over many seasons, and the Megane R.S. N4, which was approved for racing at the start of the year. This year’s results have confirmed the ability of Renault Sport Technologies to build cars that are the leaders in their categories.
And the development of the range will continue apace in 2012 with the arrival of the Twingo R2 Evo, which is fitted with a more powerful engine and improved suspension system.
