Here we come again: Once again the Roger Albert Clark Rally will be visiting Kielder forest. With 3 stages in the complex run twice on Monday there will be the traditional sting in the tail of the events of old. There will be approximately 44 miles of forest roads, interrupted by a run into service at Carlisle airport. The event will then return to Carlisle Town Centre for an early finish. This new format is to assist those of our competitors who are flying out to sample the rather warmer delights of the East African Safari event in Kenya, as we here slip quietly into winter.

I actually took a few days away last week and stayed in Stannersburn, close to Kielder Water. This allowed me to take a walk into the stages being used on the event and I am delighted to be able to say that they are in perfect condition. The surprise is in Broomylinn a stage not used for the last 20 years and it shows! The grass is growing tall but other than that it is beautiful. I thought I might do some research about the stage and I found this from 1995…

"Located 11 miles NW of Bellingham, this stage has not been used since 1993. It runs through some of the remotest and highest parts of Kielder, crossing in and out of Scotland. Like most of modern Kielder, the roads are mainly fast, well surfaced but with soft, unforgiving verges and deep ditches with some tight bends Length of the stage in 1993 was 11.08 miles, with a fastest time of 16 minutes 33 seconds, set by Colin McRae, in his works Subaru Legacy, but this was the year of the "white-out" and the stage was run in deep snow."
