Tottenham Hotspur's entry into the inaugural Superleague Formula championship was officially unveiled today at White Hart Lane, ahead of the game against fellow Superleague Formula team, AS Roma.
Tottenham Hotspur also welcomed Valencia-based GTA Motor, who was today announced as the team tasked with running the Tottenham Hotspur SF Racing Team, which will debut at the opening race of the season at Donington on August 30-31.
The search has now begun to recruit a driver to represent the Club on the track against the other entrants representing some of the biggest football clubs in the world in the six-round championship.
Founded in 1994, GTA Motor is a leading team in the Spanish Formula 3 championship and has also proved to be highly successful in sportscars - finishing 2nd last year in the International GT Open Championship.
GTA Motor has already tasted victory twice this year with young Spanish driver Jaime Alguersuari. Alguersuari is contesting both the British and Spanish F3 championships in 2008 and currently leads the points standings in the UK.
"Superleague Formula is a tremendous opportunity for our team to grow into what is going to be a very important championship," said GTA Motor Team Owner, Domingo Ochoa.
"Tottenham Hotspur SF Racing Team was a perfect choice for us. We have begun our search to find a competitive driver and we have a responsibility to Spurs fans to find someone who is going to be the best man for the job."
Tottenham Hotspur is guaranteed a repeat encounter against today's opponents AS Roma on the track this season, starting at Donington Park later this month. However further competition will come from AC Milan, PSV Eindhoven, Borussia Dortmund, FC Porto, Olympicos, RSC Anderlecht, FC Basel, Galatasaray, Rangers, Sevilla, Flamengo, Corinthians, Middle-East based Al Ain and Beijing Guoan of China.
"We have some very exciting additional football clubs to announce - starting with more big names this week," Superleague Formula President and CEO, Alex Andreu said.
"We had a great test at Vallelunga in Italy this week and all the race teams are very excited about the championship and really looking forward to Donington Park.
"It is going to be a great spectacle and we are really looking forward to seeing lots of Spurs fans at Donington ready to cheer their car on."
The 2008 Superleague Formula schedule kicks off at Donington Park (30-31 August) before moving on to venues in Germany (Nurburgring, 20-21 September), Belgium (Zolder, 4-5 October), Portugal (Estoril, 18- 19 October), Italy (Vallelunga, 1-2 November) and the season finale in Spain (Jerez, 22-23 November).
