Neel Jani misses out on pole position by 42 thousandths of a second
Seven drivers under investigation
On Saturday, Neel Jani came within 0.042 seconds from pole position for the A1GP series' feature race in Mexico City. However, results remain provisional. Seven drivers are under investigation, as they allegedly had failed to slow down following an accident of Mexican driver, David Garza, in the "Peraltada" corner in spite of double waved yellow flags. Among the drivers involved are Jani and Canadian, Robert Wickens, who set the fastest lap time. In the preceding sprint race, Jani will be starting from fourth place with his red, white and blue car of the Swiss team.
In case Canada and Switzerland are be declared guilty, Neel Jani would move up into pole position as he had set an outstanding fastest lap time in the first part of qualifying. In case the Swiss remains unpunished, contrarily to Wickens, he would be in the most favourable starting position on Sunday anyway. "I saw the yellow flags and slowed down immediately", Neel Jani insisted. "Analysis of the data recording will testify to this."
A slight consolation for the Swiss team for missing out on pole position would be the fact that the team clearly beat its fiercest rivals in the battle for overall victory in the nations' cup on both occasions. In qualifying for the sprint race, Frenchman Jonathan Cochet didn't do any better than 16th while he had to make do with 14th place on the grid for the feature race.
In the first part of sprint qualifying, Jani was still third before being outpaced by American Jonathan Summerton in the second heat. Meanwhile, South-African Adrian Zaugg claimed pole position for the fourth time this season. With fastest time halfway through qualifying for the main race, the Swiss team looked well under way to claim its fifth pole. With used tyres, Jani had beaten all his 21 opponents fair and square. He had a remarkable margin of 0.357 seconds over second fastest Robert Wickens. In the second heat, however, the Canadian, who had turned 19 on Thursday, struck back.
After the final practice session, team principal Max Welti praised his crew: "The mechanics and our engineer James Robinson have done a tremendous job. Without any problems, tjey tried several different settings and never worked into the wrong direction. Especially on the front section of the car, changes were made all the time, involving springs, shock absorbers and stabilisers." Eventually, the Swiss team came out in third place, only 20 thousandths of a second down on France, which, in turn, was 53 thousandths slower than Italy. It has to be considered, though, that Edoardo Piscopo got new tyres fitted onto his car just before the end.
