WRC Rallyes - Day three stages overview

28.06.2009: Featuring a competitive distance of just 86.86 kilometres, the final day of competition on Rally Poland is the shortest of the event and takes crews for one last sortie into the Mazurian Lake

Featuring a competitive distance of just 86.86 kilometres, the final day of competition on Rally Poland is the shortest of the event and takes crews for one last sortie into the Mazurian Lake district.

The lion's share of Sunday's stages are located north east of host town Mikolajki, close to the towns of Ryn (SS15/17) and Gizycko (SS14/16).

The day begins at 0630hrs, when the first car leaves the overnight Park Ferme for 15 minutes of service time and then the first loop of stages. The two stages are run consecutively in the morning and repeated in the afternoon after a return to Mikolajki for a 30-minute service.

The rally concludes with a second visit to the 2.5km Super Special in Mikolajki starting at 1424hrs. The wining car is scheduled to cross the finish podium shortly after.

Stage descriptions:

Experienced rally co-driver Steve Turvey is the WRC TV location director and drives each stage during the pre-event recce to check camera positions. Here is what he thinks about the opening day's stages in Poland:

SS14/16: Milki. 27.07km

“This is a good stage. It has a few soft corners but generally it’s a hard surface that won't clean too much. It starts off with some big crests that will demand a lot of nerve and commitment from the drivers. It’s generally quite fast and like all of the Polish stages there's a good variety of character. The drivers will like this one - especially towards the end.

Things to watch out for are a big left-hander on soft ground at 3.3km - this will cut up badly. There's a very narrow and fast section with a sequence of crests at 18.8km, and between 19km and 21km the road surface switches between asphalt, a dusty two-lane track and even a section of grass. There's a very narrow bridge to squeeze through at the 25km mark, then it stays fast to the flying finish."

SS15/17: Tros. 15.11km

"The second stage of the loop is shorter but still good fun to drive. It has a harder road surface than Milki but features the same variety of crests, wooded sections, chicanes, surface changes and just about everything else. The opening section is on a proper hard-baked surface with a thin covering of gravel.

There's a huge jump 600 metres in. Another thing for drivers to be cautious about is a deceptive T-junction right onto asphalt at 2.37km - overshoots here are pretty much guaranteed. There's potential for a last minute upset right the way to the end here - even the flying finish is on a crest."

SS1/18: Mikolajki SSS. 2.5km

“From a driver's point of view, this is a candidate for the best Super Special of the season. The head-to head stage is located within sight of the Service Park. It's quite an interesting route with a wide road, a jump and a bridge crossing.

The stage surface is unusual, with tarmac covered by gravel, so it should be slippery."
