The repeat pass through the 27.07km Milki stage proved to be a giant killer, bringing about the retirement of two of the leading drivers on Rally Poland.

Citroen Junior Team driver Sebastien Ogier was first to go, losing his fourth place when an engine problem forced him to park up soon after the start.

The 2008 Junior World Champion stopped his C4 WRC 2.5 kilometres from the start line after reporting a sudden loss of engine power. Petter Solberg, the man following through the stage, said Ogier had lost around five seconds with a stall on the start line.

Ogier's exit promoted Stobart Ford driver Henning Solberg into fourth, with his brother Petter 23 seconds back in fifth.

The stage also proved disastrous for Suzuki's Junior championship leader Michal Kosciuszko who hit a rock, then a tree, and stopped with radiator damage at the 25km mark, dropping out of the incredible fight for two-wheel drive honours.

Renault Clio driver Kevin Abbring moved into the J-WRC lead. "It's disappointing for him, and it looks like I pushed for nothing in there," said Abbring. "It's a shame to end the rally like this; I would have liked to have kept fighting to the end."

The rally leading trio of Mikko Hirvonen, Jari-Matti Latvala and Dani Sordo all completed the stage without a hitch but at a cautious pace.

In a bid to get more manufacturers' championship points from Poland, Citroen instructed its Junior team driver Evgeny Novikov to drop behind Sebastien Loeb in the standings. Now up to ninth, Loeb is in line for two points for Citroen. With Conrad Rautenbach, another points nominated Citroen driver, just ahead there's a chance of further manoeuvring and another point for Loeb later on.
