BELARUS RIDER ON TEAM HIGH ROAD WINS BRASSTOWN BALD CLIMB AND TAKES AT&T LEADERS JERSEY ON STAGE SIX

Stage Six – Blairsville/Union County to Brasstown Bald/Towns County
Belarusian rider Kanstantin Sivtsov of Team High Road powered past Trent Lowe (AUS) of Slipstream Chipotle and Levi Leipheimer (USA) of Astana in the final 800 meters of an 88.4-mile (142.3 km) day to win the Stage 6 of the Tour de Georgia presented by AT&T. With the finish line in sight, Lowe shed Leipheimer to take second place in the race. With his 10-second gap over Lowe, Sivtsov catapulted to first place in the General Classification and becomes the AT&T Overall Leader. Lowe drops from the race leader to second place overall. Leipheimer, last year’s winner at Brasstown Bald Mountain, rounds out the G.C. in third.
"I dream for this day," said Sivtsov, the 2004 under-23 World Champion, of winning his first stage in a U.S. "The last mountain is very hard, very steep and the last kilometers is very, very steep."
Jason McCartney (USA) of Team CSC received top honors as the best climber of the day with bonus points over two United Community Bank King of the Mountain climbs - Hogpen Gap (Category 1) and Unicoi Gap (Category 2). Lowe, who wore the leader’s yellow jersey today, was awarded the GE Best Young Rider Jersey after the stage. Neil Shirley (USA) of Athens, Ga.-based Jittery Joe’s Pro Cycling team was awarded the Georgia Lottery Most Aggressive Rider. Stage Three winner Greg Henderson (AUS) will wear the Georgia Power Sprint Leader Jersey during tomorrow’s stage.
Today’s Stage 6, the "Queen Stage of the Tour", began in Blairsville in Union County at 11:00 a.m. with 117 of the original 119 riders. Known as the Tour’s most challenging stage, both riders and thousands of spectators were treated to sunny skies and the scenic Appalachian Mountains, reaching Georgia’s highest point on The Bald at 4,783 feet in Towns County. As expected, it was an unpredictable day, beginning with an early break that was eventually caught with less than 10 miles to go. At the two kilometer mark, only a few riders remained, including Sivtsov, Lowe, Leipheimer, Oscar Sevilla (ESP) of Rock Racing, Rory Sutherland (AUS) of Health Net presented by Maxxis.
"Super talented," said McCartney of Sivtsov. "You can tell in the bunch how guys are riding, they’re just light on the pedals, and he looked good the past couple days. I think Levi kind of underestimated him."
"If you look back to the beginning of the day, there were a few names to consider, Sivtsov, Sevilla… It’s hard to predict who’s going to be strong. You could see from yesterday this kid’s going to be strong and, you know, I think that looking back I was a little bit over-confident," said Leipheimer, who won two stages in the 2007 Tour de Georgia. "And all I can say is Trent (Lowe) rode great, Slipstream rode great and High Road and Sivtsov took advantage of the battle that was going on and everybody rode a really great bike race."
Stage 7, the final stage of the 2008 Tour de Georgia presented by AT&T, will conclude tomorrow with a circuit race through the streets of downtown Atlanta. Riders will depart from Centennial Olympic Park at 1:00 p.m. The 10-lap circuit race (62.7 mi/100.9 km) will give sprinters their last three opportunities to win Georgia Power Sprint points. The race is expected to finish in Centennial Olympic Park between 3:15-3:45 p.m. The race will be followed by an awards presentation adjacent to the day’s Health & Wellness Expo.
