Volkswagen Jetta TDI feiert Renn-Premiere in den USA

Der neue Volkswagen Jetta-TDI-Cup feiert am kommenden Wochenende (25.-27. April) auf dem VIRginia International Raceway seine Renn-Premiere. Als erster Markenpokal in den USA setzt der Cup für Motorsport-Einsteiger auf hoch moderne Diesel-Technologie. Der 170 PS starke Zweiliter-TDI-Motor im Jetta macht dem Attribut "Clean Diesel" alle Ehre: Mit Katalysator und Partikelfilter erfüllt das Renn-Aggregat die hohen Umweltstandards in den USA und auch die strenge Euro-5-Norm.

Entwickelt wurde der Cup-Jetta von Volkswagen Motorsport in Deutschland. Der erste seriennahe Tourenwagen, ausgerüstet mit zahlreichen Komponenten aus dem Angebot des Volkswagen Konzerns, spulte in Oschersleben ein umfangreiches Testprogramm ab. Nachdem die endgültige Spezifikation zur Herstellung in Kleinserie festgelegt wurde, erfolgte der Aufbau der Cup-Fahrzeuge im Volkswagen Werk in Mexiko.

Das einzigartige Konzept der Rennserie - die Cup-Jetta sind bis zur kleinsten Schraube identisch, werden zentral eingesetzt und sogar unter den Fahrern getauscht - stammt ebenfalls aus Deutschland: Seit mehr als einem Jahrzehnt haben sich der ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup und seine Vorgängerserie, der Lupo-Cup, in der Nachwuchsförderung bewährt.

"Die Idee der ,Tourenwagen-Schule' ist bis heute einzigartig und ermöglicht die optimale Förderung junger Talente zu vertretbaren Kosten. Zentraler Einsatz und Fahrzeugtausch garantieren größtmögliche Chancengleichheit und erstklassigen Sport. Das Talent entscheidet über den Erfolg, nicht der Geldbeutel", erklärt Volkswagen Motorsport-Direktor Kris Nissen. "Wir sind stolz, dass diese Idee mit dem Jetta-TDI-Cup in den USA eine weitere interessante Bühne gefunden hat."

30 Teilnehmer zwischen 16 und 26 Jahren aus den USA, Kanada und Mexiko werden bei den sieben Rennen antreten und absolvierten zuvor ein intensives Sichtungsprogramm. Bei der Auswahl wurden verschiedene Faktoren betrachtet, um die Besten unter den rund 700 Bewerbern zu finden: Fahrerisches Talent sowie kommunikative Fähigkeiten wurden genauso einbezogen wie körperliche Fitness. Die "Eintrittskarte" in den Cup kostet 35.000 US-Dollar, dem Champion winken bis zu 250.000 Dollar für den nächsten Karriereschritt.

Nach dem Auftakt auf dem VIRginia Int. Raceway treten die Nachwuchs-Piloten auf dem legendären Kurs im kanadischen Mosport an (17./18. Mai). Nach einem Gastspiel in Portland (25.-27. Juli) geht es weiter nach Lime Rock (14.-17. August).

Im September stehen die Rennen auf dem Iowa Speedway (19./20. September) sowie dem Thunderbolt Raceway in New Jersey (27./28. September) auf dem Programm. Den Saisonabschluss bildet das Rennen mit der American Le Mans Serie in Road Atlanta (01.-04. Oktober).
