Bonanomi shakes it up

03/05/08 - Spa-Francorchamps – Qualifying

Marco Bonanomi (Red Devil Team Comtec) hit top form during the SuperPole, when he beat Giedo Van der Garde (P1 Motorsport) on the line. Bonanomi claimed his first pole position in Formula Renault 3.5 Series and chalks up the four points that go with it.

SuperPole

The first SuperPole of the season is here. Fifteen minutes which play a decisive role in make up of each of the weekend's starting grids. The twelve drivers are out on the track as soon as the green flag is waved.

Julien Jousse (Tech 1 Racing) was the first to take pole position, in front of Guillaume Moreau (KTR), Giedo Van der Garde and Salador Duran (Interwetten.com racing). Carrying through his momentum, Jousse improved on his fastest lap, keeping provisional pole position with a time of 2'02''807. At the same moment, Marco Bonanomi snatched second position.

Giedo Van der Garde could not be seen for dust. The Dutchman put himself in pole position, with a time of 2'02''794. A time he improved on the following lap: 2'02''511.

The supremacy of the leader of the Formula Renault 3.5 Series was shaken by Marco Bonanomi. The Italian took provisional pole position with a time of 2'02''478. Three minutes from the chequered flag, Marco Bonanomi led ahead of Giedo Van der Garde, Mikhail Aleshin (Carlin Motorsport), Julien Jousse and Bertrand Baguette (International Draco Racing). In the closing minutes, Robert Wickens (Carlin Motorsport) joined the joined the leading group, now fourth.

Marco Bonanomi: «The team has done a superb job, our car is performing very well. It was really hard to beat Giedo Van der Garde. He has been fastest in every one of the sessions. During the SuperPole I really went for it on every lap. Everything went well. I need to score race points to make up for Monza. Race one will be tricky, starting in fourth place.»

Giedo Van der Garde: «It's good to be on the front row. This morning, my car had a bit too much oversteer. I wanted to change that one thing that was effecting the handling. We prepared a good set up for the race during collective testing. So I'm confident.»

Group B

In the opening moments, a run off by Julian Theobald (Fortec Motorsport) interrupted the drivers for their second attempt. Bertrand Baguette took lead of the group setting a time of 2'02''591, in front of Marco Bonanomi and James Walker (Fortec Motorsport). The positions were not slow to change. Bonanomi dislodged the Belgian from top place - 2'02''374 -, while Borja Garcia (RC Motorsport) and Marco Barba (International Draco Racing) set times for third and fourth respectively.

Marco Barba committed an error and left the track. The session was once again halted. His fastest time would later be disqualified. He slipped back into seventh position, helping Julien Jousse, Mikhail Aleshin and James Walker, who now qualified for the SuperPole.

Group A

Miguel Molina (Pream Powerteam) took the initial lead followed by Salvador Duran and Charles Pic (Tech1 Racing). Giedo Van der Garde was quick to get into the thick of it setting a definitive time of 2'02''116. By the middle of the session, the leader of the Formula Renault 3.5 Series had moved ahead of Guillaume Moreau, Miguel Molina, Alexander Marsoin, Salvador Duran and Charles Pic.

Charles Wickens upset the order things by stealing second position, just before the session was interrupted after Alvaro Barba crashed out. The session was restarted after a few minutes. The fighting behind Van der Garde was fierce. Salvador Duran moved up to second place, ahead of Miguel Molina and Robert Wickens. At the chequered flag, Guillaume Moreau gained a place in the SuperPole after turning in the fifth fastest lap. Pablo Sanchez, sixth, was the last driver to qualify for the SuperPole.
