Noch schlimmer kann es doch nicht werden, dachte auch Teammanager Walter Raus nach dem desaströsen ersten Rennen im portugiesischen Estoril. Doch im Sonntagslauf zum vorletzten World Series Event kam es noch schlimmer für das Interwetten.com Racing Team aus Wien.
Nachdem sich Salvador Duran eigentlich gut nach vorne gekämpft hatte, verbremste er sich zwei Runden vor dem Ende und krachte Fairuz Fauzy ins Heck. Dabei stieg der World Series Bolide des Mexikaners auf und überschlug sich mehrfach. Letztendlich landete Durans Renner mehr oder weniger in Einzelteilen hinter den Leitplanken mitten auf der Rettungsstraße, aber zum Glück auf allen Vier. Somit konnte Salvador unverletzt aussteigen und auf eigenen Beinen in die Box zurückkehren.
Für seinen Teamkollegen und Landsmann Pablo Sanchez wurde es auch nur Platz 21. Er musste sich zur Mitte des Rennens eine neue Nase in der Box holen, da er sich diese im Zweikampf zu stark beschädigte. Da halfen auch zwei schnelle und perfekte Boxenstopps nicht weiter, in diesem Rennen war so oder so der Wurm drin. Den Laufsieg am Sonntag holte sich Vorjahressieger Miguel Molina. Der Spanier gewann das 15. Saisonrennen souverän vor den beiden Franzosen Charles Pic und Julien Jousse.
Nachdem es schon im Qualifying für die Interwetten-Mannschaft nicht rund lief, stand auch das erste Rennen unter einem schlechten Stern. Von den Startpositionen 17 und 20 waren somit auch nur Rang 13 für Pablo und 16 für Salvador drin. Im ersten Lauf des Wochenendes sieget Fabio Carbone vor Alvaro Barba und Robert Wickens.
Den Meistertitel sicherte sich Giedo van der Garde in Estoril vorzeitig. Der Niederländer zeigte zwar nicht gerade seine Jahresbestleistung, dennoch reichten ihm die beiden achten Plätze sicher zum Titel, da die Konkurrenz ebenfalls schwächelte. Da die Meisterkrone nun vergeben ist, wird für die letzten beiden Saisonrennen in Barcelona der Kampf um den Vizetitel entbrennen. In die letzten beiden Saisonrennen geht es vom 17. bis 19. Oktober.
