Oschersleben Opener deeply disappointing for Wirth

03.04.2012: Going into the first event of the 2012 ADAC GT Masters Season, Wirth was rightly excited to get down to the

Going into the first event of the 2012 ADAC GT Masters Season, Wirth was rightly excited to get down to the business of racing with his new team - Callaway Competition Corvette, and his new co-driver - Heinz-Harald Frentzen. Sadly though, the weekend failed to live up to Wirth's hopes and dreams.

Despite solid qualifying results of 4th place for both races, mechanical difficulties during Friday's practice turned out to be a bad omen for what the weekend would hold.

Following qualifying, Andreas reported: "We had a few unexpected little problems today in practice. Our Z06.R GT3 Corvette is virtually a new car for Callaway this year - there have been a lot of changes with it, and a completely new engine, so I guess we just have a few things to work on still.

he car was awesome in pre-season testing though - even at the Nordschleife, where you really put a car through its paces - so we're all a little surprised today. In the end though, everything seems to have worked out fine today - we have really good starting positions for both races, and the car is feeling good.

Overall this is a solid start for us, and while we really hope to bring it home this weekend, we just want to finish in the top six and start accumulating as many points as possible."

Sadly though, luck was not smiling on Andreas and the #27 Callaway Competition Corvette entry this weekend. In spite of a fantastic start in Saturday's race, where Wirth charged from 4th to 2nd by the time he cleared turn two, just minutes later electrical issues sapped the car of power and dashed all hope for a good run. The duo of Wirth and Frentzen crossed the finish line in 34th place in the 2012 opener.

Going from bad to worse, Sunday's race ended early when the engine of the #27 failed, leaving Frentzen and Wirth with a DNF for round #2.

Though obviously disappointed with the weekends results, Andreas confidently concluded: "Our problems this weekend were heartbreaking for the team. I feel so bad for our guys because they've been working so hard these past few weeks.

The good thing is that we know the speed is there - this car can run in the top positions for sure - and that's important to know. I'm feeling very positive that they will find the problems and get everything fixed before May and our next event at Zandvoort. I think we'll do well there - the track should suit us. All we need to do now is finish some races and get some points - I'm confident we'll get there."

Andreas returns to the track for the second ADAC GT Masters event on May 4 - 6 in the Netherlands at Zandvoort. The ADAC GT Masters Series will be broadcast live and full-length in 2012 on Cable 1 (Kabel1 –  www.kabeleins.de) in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and we will do our best to provide updates throughout the race weekends via Facebook and Twitter to his fans from around the world.
