The 15th edition of the Beetle Sunshine Tour will take place from 16-18 August in and around Lübeck-Travemünde
On Saturday, around 500 Beetle, New Beetles and Type 1 will illuminate the night sky with multiple light chains
The 15th Beetle Sunshine Tour – an event attracting more Beetle, New Beetles and Type 1s than anywhere else in the world – will start in Travemünde, near Lübeck at the Baltic Sea, on Friday 16 August.
Around 500 vehicles have registered to take part this time around. The highlight this year is a “sea of Beetle lights”, where hundreds of these popular Volkswagen models will come together with light chains on Saturday evening. Some of the most beautiful examples will be presented at the same time as a “Beetle light chain” on the promenade in Travemünde.
The Volkswagen Type 1 – the original Beetle – has long been one of the most popular classic cars. The New Beetle, which was produced between 1997 and 2010, is now also becoming popular among collectors as a modern classic.
Just like its predecessor, the New Beetle is a very long-lasting car. One of the oldest New Beetles that has registered to attend in Travemünde is a model that was shipped to Canada in March 1998. In 2019, the last Beetles – in production since 2011 – rolled off the production line in Mexico. These models are also already collector’s items.
Several hundred Beetles, New Beetles and Type 1s, all lit up: taking place on the Brügmanngarten festival grounds in Travemünde on Saturday evening at 10:15 pm, this visual spectacle promises to be something special. As Gabriele Kraft, founder of the Beetle Sunshine Tour, states, “85 percent of all participants have already agreed to be a part of the ‘sea of lights’.”
It is traditional for Volkswagen to show strong support for the Beetle Sunshine Tour. As in previous years, Volkswagen will be bringing a host of Beetles, New Beetles and Type 1s to Travemünde. The oldest model this time around is a Hebmüller Type 1 Convertible built in 1949.
The most powerful one, meanwhile, is a New Beetle RSi1 produced in 2000, generating 165 kW/225 PS.
