The FIA GT and Belgian GT seasons have not yet started, but professional drivers are already preparing for the racing season ahead. For his physical preparation, Bert Longin is working together with Reinout Van Schuylenbergh, his personal physical coach and Physical Coordinator of Flemish Triathlon Federation.

“Every athlete is different, but Bert Longin is really an exception”, explains Reinout Van Schuylenbergh. “He is both an athlete and a businessman, which is not really a common combination. So I developed a very special training scheme, with three major goals: endurance, flexibility/coordination and physical power.”

Reinout Van Schuylenbergh:
“The high pressure chamber of the University of Leuven is being used to improve the physical endurance of an athlete and Bert is often training in this high pressure chamber. We did the same for our athletes representing Belgium in Beijing at the Olympic Games of 2008. Bert is now very much used to high temperatures in his car and that’s one of the results of our training in this specific room.

This year we will also simulate altitude. We will be doing physical exercises in circumstances close to an altitude of 3000 metres, which should result in an even better endurance. Bert is one of the rare racing drivers doing this kind of preparation. I’m also constantly looking for new exercises and training schemes.”

Longin has a very strong condition, proved by the latest results of the physical tests done by Reinout Van Schuylenbergh. “As we come closer to the season’s start, we will do more specific ‘motorsport’ related exercises as we want Bert to be in the best condition possible to start the 2009 season.”
