Carissa Moore, 29, has made 2021 a year to remember by winning the inaugural Rip Curl WSL Finals at Lower Trestles in California, USA, to seal her fifth WSL world title. Here is all you need to know:



- The first-ever Rip Curl WSL Finals was a one-day winner-takes-all event that took place on Tuesday, September 14 at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California. The event decided the undisputed World Champion.



- Moore, who brought home a gold medal from Tokyo earlier this summer, came into the event as world number one.



- The men’s and women’s world titles were decided on the same day for the first time in history.



- The WSL Final 5 were determined based on points accrued during the seven 2021 regular-season Championship Tour events, with each surfer’s top five of seven results counting toward their year-end ranking. The top five men and women on the WSL leaderboard earning their place at the Rip Curl WSL Finals.



- Moore is the third female surfer ever to win five world titles, behind Australian duo Stephanie Gilmore and Layne Beachley who each boast seven.



- Moore is Hawaii’s most-successful surfer ever on the world stage. Her 2019 championship surpassed Andy Irons’ three World Titles and John John Florence’s two titles.



- Moore previously won titles in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2019.



- Moore said: “I regrouped, let it all go, and surfed from my heart. I’m happy it worked out. I would not be where I’m at today without my team - especially my husband. Feeling that love and support. My family is here, they flew all the way from home. Even my family and friends all over the world, I appreciate them so much. I don’t think I could have asked for anything more. I’m really grateful to god, the universe and everyone behind me.”



- She continued: “It’s been an unbelievable year. I’ve never been in the water and won a world title so that was extra special. It was very nerve racking and it wasn’t how I imagined it would go today. I came in from that first heat and I was having a meltdown. Luckily, I have such an amazing support crew. I wouldn’t be here without all the love. Number five sounds pretty good!”
