Take a look at our picks for ways you can improve the performance of your car
The performance of your car comes down to a few things: its speed, its acceleration, its braking, its handling, its ride quality, its cornering, and other performance measures. However, there are things that can affect its performance beyond the hardware, including temperature, load, environmental factors, terrain, weather, diving habits and trip length.
Some of these can be improved upon to take that driving Miss Daisy vehicle to something Dominic Toretto would drool over. Take a look at our picks for ways you can improve the performance of your car.

Perform regular maintenance
Let’s start with the way of keeping your car in tip top shape that will not break the bank. Like anything else, your body, your mind, your photos, etc. they will all deteriorate with time and neglect. The most affordable way to make sure your car keeps running well is to keep it regularly maintained.
Do a regular check up on your car every six months. Cover everything from replacing worn spark plugs, changing clogged filters, and ensuring your tires have the correct tire pressure and alignment. Have your car put in for its regular service to locate and fix any issues that might appear and get an engine clean-up done by a professional to restore the performance of your engine. Make a checklist and add changing the brake fluid, the gearbox fluid, and any oil changes.
Make sure you’re covered
While we’re on the subject of regular maintenance, you should also make sure you are covered to save you money in the long run. Small incidents can result in big prices that insurance can then cover.
But what’s covered by car insurance? Depending on what insurance policy you take out, it can cover only third parties involved in an incident, like another driver or the owner of a property, or it can cover damage and theft to your own vehicle. In other cases, it will cover your personal medical payments if you wish.
It won’t cover maintenance and the optional upgrades suggested below, but it is an important part of owning a vehicle that could save you from falling into a deep financial pit if you are upgrading your vehicle for more fun driving endeavors.
Update the exhaust system
The first thing you should look at when you are considering the performance of your car, is its exhaust. The performance of your car will go down significantly with a shoddy exhaust system and changing it can make a big difference.
Before you spend money on a cold air intake or a turbocharger, see the difference a decent exhaust system can make to your vehicle’s performance. Your car will soon see more horsepower, use less fuel, and have improved acceleration.

Leverage a cold air intake
Optimal airflow is important to allowing a vehicle to run at its peak performance. The more air available to your engine, the more it will generate power.
To keep as much airflow as possible, you can install a cold air intake, which will force cold air into your engine while you are driving. This will allow you to gain more speed faster with a surge of power that will run through the vehicle.
Plus, cold air will improve fuel efficiency, so it practically pays for itself.
Switch up your tires
Tires have an important role in the performance of your car. They are the only physical contact your car has to the road and therefore are the first thing to wear out with use of the car. Choosing the right tires will determine how smooth your ride is, how effective your braking is, how accurate your turns are and how much power you can control while driving.
The first step to upgrading your tires is to understand its features, like tread depth, diameter, how rigid they are, how wide they are and how the tire pressure affects their performance. Getting the right balance on all of these will make handling the car a lot easier, which will let you drive safer and faster.
Put your car on a diet
As go kart racing and F1 can teach you, keeping your car as light as possible will keep it running at its best. With little weight, there will be less pressure on the car to carry. There are degrees of fixing this. You can start by making sure there is nothing inside the car except a driver, so empty your trunk.
If you’re good with a spanner, you can go so far as to fit lighter body panels to the car or remove any electrical components that can weigh it down.
