Mitsubishi Motors Corporation today announced global production, as well as domestic sales and export figures for October 2008. • Production: total and in Japan Total global production came in at 119,570 units, a decline of 3.7 percent over October 2007 and marking the eighth consecutive monthly decrease. Production volume in Japan at 80,072 units was up 6.3 percent as a 7.6 percent increase in passenger car output outpaced a 5.4 percent decrease in commercial vehicle output for the second year-on-year increase in two months. This growth was driven principally by a 30.4 percent increase in output (34,388 units) of the new Lancer series in line with brisk sales in Russia and in Middle East & African markets and by the staged increase in production volume of the new Toppo minicar model. • Sales in Japan Vehicle sales in Japan in October totaled 14,349 units, a 2.7 percent year-on-year decrease and the 14th consecutive monthly decline since September 2007. Total passenger car sales were marginally up, by 1.4 percent, while commercial vehicle sales were 15.1 percent down on the same month last year. Registered vehicle sales were 39.0 percent down as 39.6 percent and 29.4 percent increases in sales of Pajero and Colt models respectively failed to offset slower sales of Galant Fortis, Delica D:5 and Outlander models. Total minicar sales volume was 23.6 percent up as strong showings by the new Toppo and the 2009 model year Pajero Mini made up for slower sales of i and eK models. • Production overseas Overseas production volume totaled 39,498 units, 19.1 percent down over October last year and the eighth consecutive monthly decline. By region, Asia came in with 23,172 units, a 21.8 percent decrease as a 65.6 percent increase in production volume at KRM*1 in Indonesia on the back of healthy sales and a 6.9 percent increase at MMTh*2 in Thailand buoyed by healthy exports failed to offset the end of MMC model assembly at Proton in Malaysia and the impact of slow sales in China and Taiwan on output levels in those countries. In North America output at 5,315 units declined by 32.4 percent over October 2007 as production levels were adjusted to match slow sales in the U.S. *2 MMTh: Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand) Co., Ltd. • Export shipments from Japan Total exports from Japan of 53,030 units represented a 20.8 percent increase over October 2007. Exports to Asia at 2,993 units were 6.2 percent up over last year, this accounted for mainly by a 38.0 percent increase in shipments of knock-down kits. Exports to North America at 4,478 units were 101.3 percent up over October 2007 when shipments to that market were impacted by a shortage of shipping space. Exports to Europe at 25,151 units were 26.8 percent up on October 2007 as brisk sales in Russia more than made up for slower sales in the countries of Western Europe.
