The Radical SR1 Cup will offer fresh challenges in 2020, with two exciting new circuits joining the series’ calendar for the first time. Competitors will also have the chance to enter two additional Festival events – including an international outing – on current grand prix circuits.



Castle Combe and the Snetterton 200 layout – in use for much of Snetterton’s long history – will host SR1 competition for the first time. The 2020 season will also provide SR1 racers with the opportunity to join the Radical Challenge as an invitational class on the Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit and at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.



The UK’s fastest entry level championship, with the 182bhp Radical SR1 delivering unrivalled performance and GT4-compariable pace for novice and experienced drivers alike, the 2020 SR1 Cup will continue its popular six-round, one-day format with qualifying and two 20-minute races comprising each event.



The season commences at Oulton Park as the SR1 Cup supports the opening round of the British GT/F3 package for the third consecutive year, racing on the International layout. From there, the series moves to Snetterton, before heading west to Castle Combe for the first time. The Wiltshire circuit hasn’t featured on a Radical calendar since 2014, but historically has played host to some of Radical’s closest championship battles, and the SR1 Cup will headline the June meeting.



The championship returns to Snetterton in July, but this time on the 200 layout, which is similar to the original circuit configuration used prior to the Norfolk venue’s 2011 redesign. Diving onto the Bentley Straight after Wilson hairpin, the shorter lap will provide lots of overtaking opportunities for the SR1 Cup field. Brands Hatch Indy makes a welcome return before October’s championship finale at Donington Park.



In addition to the six points-scoring rounds, SR1 drivers will for the first time also have the opportunity to race at Spa-Francorchamps as part of the Radical Festival. The SR3-focused Radical Challenge includes an invitational class for the SR1s to join two 50-minute and a 20-minute sprint race across the three-day Belgian event. SR1 competitors can prepare themselves for that epic weekend with an inaugural Radical Challenge outing around the Silverstone Grand Prix track in August.



Six new teams and a host of new drivers took up Radical’s unbeatable entry level racing experience in the SR1 Cup in 2019, proving the popularity of the multi-class structure, which includes the Rookie Cup for novices and the Fangio Trophy for more senior drivers. The series’ ever-growing grids can be partly attributed to Radical’s novice-friendly race training programme, which helps newcomers of all ages attain their race licence before providing bespoke professional tuition ahead of their racing debut, and throughout the season.



Carly Latcham, Championship Coordinator, said: “The feedback from our SR1 grid in preparing our 2020 calendar has been clear – our single-day format works! As a result, we’ve retained the same popular race event structure, whilst introducing some new challenges to delight our returning drivers, and newcomers too.



“The aim of SR1 Cup has always been to provide novice racers with a broad range of track experiences so with the visits to Castle Combe and Snetterton 200 we’ve got two circuits with no SR1 history, presenting a level playing field. Our teams and drivers have encouraged us to look at offering opportunities to sample longer-distance, endurance-style racing. By creating the invitational class at Spa-Francorchamps and Silverstone, they now have the chance to do just that, with the full support of Radical’s renowned trackside technical, spares and hospitality services.”



The announcement of the 2020 SR1 Cup schedule follows the early November release of the calendar for the UK-based Radical Challenge, a seven-round championship that spans from April to October.
