RSPORTS two-car effort qualify in top ten for Las Vegas Grand-Prix

08.04.2007: RSPORTS two-car effort qualify in top ten for Las Vegas Grand-Prix

After all the anticipation, the season is finally about to get underway as final qualifying took place this afternoon in downtown Las Vegas for the start of the 2007 Champ Car World Series tomorrow afternoon.

During the morning practice session, RSPORTS driver Justin Wilson rounded out the top five after completing 20 laps around the 2.440-mile temporary street course. He posted his best time of the morning on his last orbit before taking the checkered flag, recording a time of 1:20.828 (108.675 mph) to finish the session in the fifth spot. Teammate Alex Tagliani would finish in the seventh spot after posting his best time of 1:20.940 (108.525 mph) on his 11 lap during a 16-lap stint this morning.

The positions would trade for the RSPORTS duo during the afternoon session. During the 15-minute practice session during the final round of qualifying, Tagliani sat in the third spot. After taking the green flag for the qualifying segment, his times would continue to improve and he posted his best time of the weekend with a 1:18.850 (111.401 mph). That time was good enough to put him fourth on tomorrow’s grid for the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Wilson’s fortune was not as good, as he struggled this afternoon in terms of finding the speed he needed to qualifying higher up on the grid. He sat in the ninth spot after the practice session this afternoon, and would obtain one more position to finish eighth overall. He will start on the grid in that spot, after recording his best time of the weekend at 1:19.269 (110.813 mph).

The event everyone has been waiting for has arrived. The inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix kicks off the first of 16 Champ Car events this season. The green flag is scheduled to wave on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. local time. The race can be seen on NBC live with coverage beginning at 3:30 p.m. EST. Live Timing and Scoring can be found on the Champ Car website,, where you can also sign up for Race Director for additional race coverage.

Alex Tagliani #8 LXN2 Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone

"I am quite happy overall. I am just so thankful for the opportunity that Paul (Gentilozzi) and Dan (Pettit) have given me. I feel good about the RSPORTS team, and I think we are on the road to success this season. I feel that I am a good support for Justin (Wilson) and I feel that I have learned a lot from him and the team already.

This is only the second time that we (both teams) are working together at a race track, so we still have a lot of catching up to do. But I think that we already have some great chemistry and that we are learning a lot from each other. I get along so well with my engineer Chris Lerch, and overall this whole deal is just a fantastic opportunity.

Today’s qualifying session went fairly well. I am happy with the #8 LXN2/RSPORTS car, and it is great to be starting in the top five for the first race of this season. The goal is to get lots of points, and obviously finish the race.

But what is important is that we are running up front and I feel that we will be able to stay strong tomorrow during the race. I feel that we are in a good position with where we want the car to be, but we will work on making some more improvements tonight in hopes of being even quicker tomorrow."

Justin Wilson #9 CDW Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone

"We just weren’t quick enough today. The #9 CDW/RSPORTS car felt OK, but obviously the speed just wasn’t there. It’s disappointing, because we were up there yesterday, but today it slipped away. We need to look at the data to understand how to improve the car and hopefully we’ll be more competitive tomorrow."
