Harald Schlegelmilch Fifth Quickest at First Atlantic Test with Conquest Racing

12.03.2009: Conquest Racing and Latvian driver Harald Schlegelmilch completed their first pre-season test yesterday, ahead of next week’s Cooper Tires Presents the Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda

Conquest Racing and Latvian driver Harald Schlegelmilch completed their first pre-season test yesterday, ahead of next week’s Cooper Tires Presents the Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda season opening race. Rookie Schlegelmilch ended the two-day test at the 11-turn, 2.034-mile Palm Beach International Raceway road course by registering the fourth quickest lap in the final day’s afternoon session with a time of 1:08.116, which placed him fifth overall in a tight field.

The 21-year-old Schlegelmilch, who was driving an Atlantic car for the first time, used the open test to familiarize himself with his new surroundings and new team while gaining as much knowledge and experience possible before heading into next week’s season opener at Sebring International Raceway.

“First of all, I was really happy to get back in a race car, it’s been about four months since the last time, so it was nice to get back behind the wheel. The Atlantic car surprised me. It reminded me of an F3 car and it has so much grip. It’s a lot of fun to drive.

“Everyone on the Conquest team did a good job and I’m satisfied and really happy with the test,” continued Schlegelmilch, who was the second fastest rookie. “Overall I think we are the ones that made the biggest improvement over the two days and that is encouraging as we head to Sebring next week. I enjoyed the test but now I’m really looking forward to doing the race.”

Conquest Racing team owner Eric Bachelart added: “Harald proved himself well at the test. There immediately was good chemistry between him and the team, which is always important, and he worked well with everyone. He did a good job. Both he and the team progressed a lot over the two days and things seem promising for Sebring next week.”

With a first test under their belt, Schlegelmilch and Conquest Racing now turn their focus to the Sebring race that takes place at 2:00 p.m. March 20 at Sebring International Raceway. Conquest along with the other Atlantic teams will have one day of testing on Tuesday, March 17 before official activities get underway Wednesday, March 18 with morning practice and round one of qualifying.
