DAKAR 2013  Stage 6 Thursday January 10th 2013
1st start (GMT-3) : 8:45 AM

17:11 - bike
Chaleco closes in in the general standings

The French trio are still on top on completion of the sixth stage, but in a different order: Olivier Pain still leads, 2'22" ahead of Cyril Despres.

David Casteu drops down a place to third, 4'48” behind the race leader. Following his stage victory, Francisco Lopez now lies in fourth place, trailing Pain by 6'06". Ruben Faria is fifth, 8'35" behind the young Frenchman.

14:17 - bike
007 - End of section 2: Chaleco wins!

The Chilean rider has won the first fully Chilean special stage of the year with a total time of 4:56'21" in front of Portugal's Ruben Faria (2'34 behind).

Cyril Despres is provisionally in third, 3'48" behind the winner, gaining 4 minutes on Olivier Pain and more than 7 minutes over David Casteu.

Once several more competitors have arrived, notably Kurt Caselli, there should be a clearer picture of the stage finishes in the bike category.

13:59 - bike
007 - Chaleco takes up the baton

Francisco Lopez, who was second before Paulo Gonçalves experienced problems, has taken over first place after 364 km less than 100 km from the finishing line.

He leads Ruben Faria, Kurt Caselli and Cyril Despres who still has the leading group within reach and boasts a big advantage over Olivier Pain and David Casteu, the first and second placed riders in the general standings yesterday evening.

13:22 - bike
020 - Gonçalves on his way again

The Portuguese rider was only halted for around five minutes. The reason for this stop is still unknown.

13:20 - bike
020 - Gonçalves at a standstill

Whilst he was leading the stage, Portugal's Paulo Gonçalves ground to a halt after 333 km of the special stage. The reason is unknown, but the biker is in a very rocky zone so it could be due to a puncture.

12:11 - bike
029 - Behind the leaders

The riders are continuing to complete the first portion of the special stage, meaning the positions are changing fairly constantly.

Behind the leading quartet, which remains unchanged, fifth place is occupied by Kurt Caselli 3'06 behind the stage leader, whereas sixth placed biker Jeremias Israel Esquerre trails Gonçlaves by 16".

Gerard Farres Guell should also find himself in this pack and will be finishing in the minutes that follow.

12:00 - bike
020 - End of section1: Gonçalves leads

The Portuguese Husqvarna rider wearing No. 20 leads after the first 228 km of the special stage. For the moment, he leads Francisco Lopez by 29".

Ruben Faria lies in third, 54" behind Chaleco. In fourth, Jordi Viladoms trails Faria by 1'15".

Cyril Despres is almost four minutes behind the stage leader, but has a considerable lead himself over Olivier Pain and David Casteu.

If the situation remains the same, he could leapfrog them this evening in the general standings.

11:20 - bike
014 - Alain Duclos sets off again

The Frenchman spent a long time at a halt after 45 km. Two of his team-mates stopped as they passed him, but then set off again leaving him on his own. Duclos has finally managed to set off again and has currently covered 60 km of the special stage.

11:03 - bike
Gonçlaves leads at CP1

A little more than half way through the first part of the day's stage - after 131 kilometres to be precise - Paulo Gonçalves (Portugal/Husqvarna) provisionally leads the stage in front of Ruben Faria (Portugal/KTM) by 1'15", Jordi Villadoms (Spain/Husqvarna) by 1'39" and Francisco Lopez (Chile/KTM) by 1'46".

The leading pair in the general standings, Olivier Pain and David Casteu, have so far lost 7'58" and 10'50" respectively to the stage leader. Cyril Despres is currently 14th, 5'43" behind Gonçlaves.

10:29 - bike
014 - Alain Duclos at a standstill

After 45 km of the special stage, Alain Duclos has been at a standstill for a few minutes in a zone of dunes. He has been joined by Frank Verhoestraete, his team-mate in the Sherko team, as well as by the other rider on the team, British biker James West.

09:03 - bike
010 - David Casteu starts the special

The French Yamaha rider has just started today's special, tackling the first 229 kilometres, followed by a 96-km neutralised zone, before the final 129 km against the clock. Behind Casteu, general standings leader Olivier Pain will try and maintain his lead, but will have to resist the ambitions of title holder Cyril Despres.

07:19 - bike
010 - Casteu on the road

The winner of yesterday's stage, David Casteu, is opening the road today in front of his countryman Olivier Pain and Spaniard Juan Pedrero Garcia. The 151 bikes authorised to start today will ride 291 km of link stage before tackling 455 km of special stage, with the bivouac at Calama as their destination.

Arica-Calama: getting to grips with the Atacama

On the day's menu, there will be 291 kilometres of link stage then 455 km of special stage for all categories. This evening, at the bivouac in Calama, the rally will have covered almost 3,000 km. For the first special stage on Chilean territory this year there will be a return to the Atacama Desert: sand and dunes make up two thirds of the distance.

However, the stopwatch will be ticking on two distinct portions separated by a neautralised zone, with the second section holding a perhaps unhappy reacquaintance for some with fesh-fesh. In total, the day will be a very long one, to such an extent where the competitors' bodies will start to suffer from the lack of sleep, especially for those who have experienced several mishaps.

A race hierarchy is starting to develop, though whilst Marcos Patronelli is comfortably installed at the top of the quad general standings, the three other categories are much closer. In the bikes behind Olivier Pain, the first 25 riders are all within the same hour.

In the car race, for the top 8 Stéphane Peterhansel is still within reach. In the truck race, the battle is on between Kamaz, Iveco, Man and Tatra… And the comeback that Gerard De Rooy is promising will be one of the high points of the day.
