11.01.2013: Dakar Rally 2013 Stage 7 January 11th, 2013 11:14 - bike 009 - Pain behind Caselli

Dakar Rally 2013  Stage 7  January 11th, 2013

15:18 - bike
001 - Despres up and running again

The KTM rider's GPS is now signalling that he is on the move and is heading towards the bike/quad bivouac, located near to Cachi, at a moderate speed.

15:09 - bike
001 - Despres breaks down on the link stage!

Cyril Despres has just notified that he has broken down 133 km along the link stage, just around thirty kilometres away from the bivouac. Apparently, the Frenchman's bike has completely stopped responding.

He is having to repair by himself, because he cannot rely on his assistance team during the Marathon stage for the bikes and the quads. These two categories are in a different bivouac to the cars and trucks, and the riders are on their own.

13:13 - bike
Despres' problems

The Frenchman, who finished the day 13'08'' behind the stage winner, losing several places in the general standings, had gearbox problems. He was not able to use his fifth gear which, in such a fast special stage, was a major constraint.

12:48 - bike
Changes to the top 5 in the general standings

Behind Olivier Pain, still leader, Francisco Lopez now occupies second place, 6'06" behind the Frenchman, but ahead of David Casteu, who trails his countryman by 6'37".

Ruben Faria is in fourth place in front Cyril Despres in fifth, respectively 9'42" and 14'07" behind the leader.

12:43 - bike
010 - Casteu eighth

Behind the top five, sixth place is occupied by Juan Pedrero Garcia, 2'42" behind the stage winner, followed by Poland's Kuba Przygonski, 2'51" behind Caseilli, and David Casteu, 3'12" behind the day's victor. Stefan Svitko and Alessandro Botturi make up the rest of the top 10.

12:39 - bike
013 - Farres Guell back on the move

The Spanish rider is back on the move in the special stage and has just reached the 144-km point.

12:37 - bike
Verhoeven and Pain behind Caselli

The young French leader of the general bike standings is not ready to budge even an inch: by finishing 1'23" behind the day's winner at the same time as Francisco Lopez, he strengthens his lead. Frans Verhoeven has made a comeback with fourth place, 1'30" behind Caselli, in front of provisional fifth placed rider Ruben Faria.

Cyril Despres has lost 13 minutes on this special stage and drops back to 14'07” from the leader in the general standings.

12:27 - bike
029 - Caselli wins his first special stage

Replacing Marc Coma on a KTM bike, Kurt Caselli perhaps did not expect to win a special stage on the Dakar 2013. However, that is just what the American has done on this ultra-fast timed section, gobbling up the 218 kilometres in a time of 1:51'31”.

12:03 - bike
013 - Farres Guell breaks down

Spanish biker Gérard Farres Guell has stopped after 138.5 km. He is been repairing his motorbike for the last ten minutes.

12:01 - bike
004 - Viladoms at a standstill

The Spanish rider has ground to a halt just after the 38-km mark, at a point where the rally route follows an earthen track. He appears to be suffering technical problems.

11:42 - bike
029 - Caselli has a solid lead

Even though his lead is slight, Kurt Caselli still remains out in front of the special ahead of Olivier Pain and Frans Verhoeven by 1'11". At the 142-km point, Cyril Despres has again lost time and trails the stage leader by 8'59".

Another of the leading trio in the general standings, David Casteu has posted a time in the top 10, a little less than 3 minutes behind Caselli.

11:14 - bike
009 - Pain behind Caselli

With the sixth rider reaching the first time-check point, the provisional order has changed: Olivier Pain is on the coat tails of Kurt Caselli, with only three seconds separating the two bikers.

Frans Verhoeven climbs into joint third place alongside Polish rider Kuba Przygosky, 27” behind the leader.

11:09 - bike
029 - Caselli leads

Now that the first 5 competitors have reached the first intermediate point, Aemerican Kurt Caselli provisionally leads the stage, 51 seconds ahead of Francisco Lopez, 1'11" in front of Alessandro Botturi, 2'29" ahead of Ruben Faria and 3'02" in front of Cyril Despres.

10:34 - bike
Start of the bike special

Francisco Lopez started the special stage at 10.10 AM local time. 218 km lie ahead of him, on the first timed section on Argentine soil on the Dakar 2013.

The first 136 km of the special stage will take place on earthen tracks before a more rocky section leading up to the finishing line.

06:02 - bike
007 - Chaleco faces the Andes

The Dakar rises at dawn this morning. The caravan is due to set off at 4:30 am local time, with the motorcycles leading the charge, as usual. Francisco López will be at the front of the 145 motorcycles cleared to start today's stage.

02:00
Calama-Salta: hitting the heights

There will be two separate bivouacs in Salta for the car/truck and bike/quad categories. However, all the categories will tackle the same 218 kilometre special stage. The climb up the Andes Mountain range will take place early in the morning as the link stage takes a convoy of the riders and crews up to a record altitude of 4,975 m, reached at the highest pass in the whole of Argentina.

On the special stage, the altimeter will be reading between 3,400 m and 4,462 m. Another important figure is the one indicated by the thermometer: in this season and at the highest altitude there will be an average temperature of 15 degrees. The biggest difficulty will reside in how to manage effort as well as tiredness, whose effects are accentuated day after day.

The suspense is still total two days away from the rest day, because the car, bike and truck general standings are still only made up of small gaps and mechanical problems, driving errors and bad luck still could throw a spanner in the works for the leaders between Chile and Argentina.
