Dakar 2013  Stage 9  January 14th, 2013
2013 - Argentina/Chile
1st start (GMT-3) : 7:40 AM

19:12 - car
309 - Waiting for Chicherit

The first driver to set off this morning, Guerlain Chicherit, is clearly struggling, although we still don't know why. He went through the km 499 CP just over 60 minutes ago, more than an hour off the pace and in a provisional fiftieth place.

19:05 - car
302 - Overall: More breathing space for Peter

Stéphane Peterhansel's margin over his rivals, now at 49'31", is enough for him to start relaxing a bit. Nasser Al-Attiyah's mishaps benefitted the Frenchman, who now leads Giniel de Villiers. Leonid Novitskiy's third place makes Mini dream of a double on the podium, with Nani Roma fourth at 1 h 34'16".

Fifth-placed Orlando Terranova (+2 h 01'08") will have to see off the attacks of Carlos Sousa and his Great Wall, currently sixth at 2 h 13'41".

18:58 - car
300 - Nasser Al-Attiyah still at a standstill

A nightmare special for the Qatar Red Bull driver. The Qatari has stopped several times since the start and he's still in the sector after km 495. His GPS has been sending a stop signal for more than an hour. Even if he makes it to the finish, he'll end up in the catacombs of the general classification.

18:50 - car
313 - Finish 2: Terranova takes third

Behind Nani Roma and Stéphane Peterhansel's Minis, Argentina's Orlando Terranova (+6'54") makes it a 1-2-3 for the X-Raid team. American Robby Gordon and his Hummer (+8'37") came in fourth, followed by Giniel de Villiers' Toyota (+9'39"), Carlos Sousa's Haval Great Wall (+10'23") and Leonid Novitskiy's Mini (+11'20").

Geoff Olholm and his Toyota (+20'23") also produced a noteworthy performance by dominating Lucio Álvarez (+27'37").

18:26 - car
Finish 2: Roma makes it two!

The Spaniard takes his second stage in the 2013 Dakar with 4'11" on teammate Stéphane Peterhansel, 6'54" on Orlando Terranova and 8'37" on Robby Gordon. We're now waiting for Giniel de Villiers and Carlos Sousa.

18:21 - car
500 - Al-Attiyah in a tight spot

Multiple stops for the man at the wheel of the Qatar Red Bull buggy. Nasser Al-Attiyah has again come to a halt four kilometres from the finish line.

17:52 - car
Nani Roma forges ahead after 499 km

The checkpoint confirmed that the feeling Giniel de Villiers was losing time wasn't just an impression. Spain's Nani Roma seized the lead with a nine-second margin over the South African.

Stéphane Peterhansel is third at 4'26", Robby Gordon fourth at 8'05", and Carlos Sousa seems poised to take a terrific fifth place at 8'50". But first he'll have to see off the onslaught of Leonid Novitskiy, who's just 21" off the pace of the Top 5.

17:31 - car
301 - Giniel de Villiers in trouble?

The South African's pace nosedived a few minutes ago as he was leading the race. His Toyota Hilux has yet to go through km 423, although nineteen other competitors have already done so.

17:30 - car
325 - Wevers and Lurquin's dream goes up in smoke...

The Dutch-Belgian crew was having a very good 2013 Dakar, but disaster struck in today's special. Their Ford HRX caught fire at km 423. Erik Wevers and Fabian Lurquin emerged unscathed, but their vehicle is wrecked.

15:25 - car
400 - Repair time for Raud

The man at the wheel of the Toyota Land Cruiser of Team Biscauto and his co-driver Guy Lefebvre are busy repairing their car with the help of Thierry Richard and Jean-Marie Leroux, the crew of the KDJ 120 of Team Lardeau Compétition.

15:06 - car
313 - Finish 1: Terranova fourth

Argentina's Orlando Terranova and his BMW X3 are fourth in the provisional classification, 4'57" behind leader Giniel de Villiers. The cars are currently making their way through the neutralised sector.

14:08 - car
301 - Finish 1: De Villiers perched on top

The South African at the wheel of the Toyota Hilux made good on what he showed at the checkpoints by prevailing at the end of the first part of today's special. His total time of 2 h 53'47" was enough for him to beat the Minis of Nani Roma (+43") and Stéphane Peterhansel (+3'02").

An outstanding Carlos Sousa came in fourth at 3'36", with Robby Gordon a further 38" back. Leonid Novitskiy's Mini was sixth at 7'20", with Guerlain Chicherit in seventh place just 1" behind the Russian, followed by Geoff Olholm at 10'30" and Nasser Al-Attiyah at 10'46".

13:45 - car
409 - One Kazakh helps another

The two Toyota Desert Warriors driven by Kazakhs Aidyn Rakhimbayev and Bauyrzhan Issabayev (race nos. 409 and 410) are both at a standstill at km 117. Issabayev's been struck by a mechanical and his teammate has stopped to help him repair it.

13:35 - car
369 - Game over for Ferreyros?

Km 45 of today's special could very well be the end of the road for Peruvian Ramón Ferreyros and his co-driver José María Rodríguez. They're fighting to repair their vehicle, which has been heavily damaged in a crash.

12:43 - car
301 - De Villiers still in charge after 121 km

The South African enjoys a 1'14" margin over Spaniard Nani Roma. Third-placed Stéphane Peterhansel is 1'23" down, while fourth-placed Orlando Terranova lies 2'23" behind the leader and is doing his best to see off Guerlain Chicherit's onslaught, with just 22" between them.

A cracking performance by Carlos Sousa in sixth place, ahead of Robby Gordon and Leonid Novitskiy.

12:35 - car
330 - A difficult comeback for Garland

Aussie Bruce Garland, who skipped last year's Dakar, must have done something to annoy Lady Luck on the road to Córdoba. It looks like the engine of his Isuzu D-Max gave up 175 km into the special.

11:24 - car
301 - De Villiers bares his teeth!

38 km into the special, Giniel de Villiers' Toyota Hilux has clocked a time of 34'00", beating Nani Roma's Mini by 16", Stéphane Peterhansel's Mini by 20" and Lucio Álvarez's Hilux by 49".

Next came Robby Gordon (+1'28"), who's just one second ahead of Orlando Terranova. Leonid Novitskiy was 2'14" down, with Nasser Al-Attiyah 2'36" back.

10:18 - car
The cars are go!

The first car started the special at 10:13 am local time. It was none other than Guerlain Chicherit's SMG buggy, followed by Orlando Terranova (BMW X3) and Robby Gordon (Hummer).

08:10 - car
And beyond the Top 20?

Zhou Yong, a Chinese driver at the wheel of a Chinese car, is within striking distance of the Top 20. Just behind him, Robby Gordon's Hummer is working its way back up following their problems in the first few stages.

Gordon currently leads Boris Gadasin's Nissan G-Force pick-up. Now that we mention drivers in pick-ups, Eric Vigouroux sits in thirtieth place in his Dakar comeback.

08:06 - car
Overall: what's going on behind the leaders?

Although all eyes are focused on the fight for the title, let's look at the situation beyond the Top 10 at the beginning of the second week of the 2013 Dakar.

Portugal's Carlos Souza lies in tenth place and could very well drive his Haval Great Wall to final Top 10. The gaps between him and eighth-placed Orlando Terranova and ninth-placed Beñat Errandonea. Nevertheless, hunter Sousa is himself hunted by Pascal Thomasse, who's just 14'17" behind him.

Dutchman Erik Wevers and his HRX are still in the running, less than 10 minutes down on the MD Rallye buggy. A similar gap separates him from Guilherme Spinelli's Mitsubishi.

07:56 - car
Overall: what's going on behind the leaders? (part 3)

Another focal point of the race is the fifteenth place, where Geoff Olholm's Toyota and Matthias Kahle's Sam-Mercedes are locked in a fierce battle, with a mere 7'20" between them.

The fight on their rear mirrors is even closer, as Adam Malysz's Toyota and Christian Lavieille's Nissan Juke Dessoude clash for the seventeenth place with just 2'09" between them. Let's not forget about Lucio Álvarez, who's driving in twentieth place after a first week plagued by mishaps.

07:52 - car
Chicherit blazes the trail

Guerlain Chicherit, the man who came in from the storm to win Saturday's stage, is the first rider to take off from Tucumán Province for the 176 km link section which will take the 106 cars to the start of the special, not far from Alijilán. The car race is scheduled to begin at 10:13 am local time.

Tucumán-Córdoba: the longest day

At a whopping 852 kilometres, this stage is the longest in the 2013 Dakar, with a 593 km special for the cars, the motorcycles and the quads. The lucky trucks will only face a 293 km timed section.

But it is true that the first stage after the rest day will focus on the trucks, which will go head-to-head in just one of the two parts of the special but will have the rare privilege of opening the way. Monday is a rather rolling stage which will favour the experts in trajectories. In the other categories, the distance is twice as long due to the addition of a much more technical part where the pilots will have to swerve round curves in the forests.

They'll have to watch out for the trees, not least because swift assistance trucks won't be allowed onto this course. The drivers and riders will have to stay extremely focused throughout. It's also an opportunity to open up gaps in the motorcycle classification, where the top 18 riders lie within less than an hour of each other, as well as the car category, which is still looking for an undisputed master.
