Al Attiyah versus Peterhansel in the general standings

The situation in the car general standings is now a two horse race, in light of these two men's isolation at the top of the leader board. The whims of the desert eliminated Nani Roma and Carlos Sainz as potential threats.

Peter now has a lead of 1'18" over Nasser, whilst third placed driver Giniel de Villiers is 42'31" behind the leader and fourth placed Leonid Novitskiy trails the Frenchman by 44'47".

The SMG buggy driven by Guerlain Chicherit (1:16'26" behind the leader) lies in front of Ronan Chabot's (1h27'52" behind Peterhansel), which in turn is ahead of Nani Roma's Mini (1:30'52" behind his team-mate).

17:03 - car
End of section 2: Alvarez, Chabot, Chicherit and Wevers...

These are the names of the four drivers that round off the top 10: seventh is Lucio Alvarez (Toyota), 25'36" behind Al Attiyah, eighth and ninth are the SMG buggies driven by Ronan Chabot (+) and Guerlain Chicherit, respectively 25'53" and 28'28" behind the Qatari), whilst tenth place is taken up by the HRX driven by Erik Wevers, 30'16" behind the stage winner.

More finishers...

The cars are coming in little by little at the finishing line of the special. Three new competitors have positioned themselves after the provisional leading trio. Fourth place goes to Orlando Terranova, 14'13" behind Nasser Al-Attiyah, fifth to Leonid Novitskiy, 15'48" behind the Qatari and sixth to Giniel de Villiers, 17'17" behind the stage winner. However, these results are still only provisional…

16:04 - car
300 - End of section 2: Al-Attiyah beats Peter

At the finish of the second timed section, the situation is much the same as beforehand. Nasser Al-Attiyah has won the special stage with a time of 4:52'08", beating Stéphane Peterhansel by 8'36".

Robby Gordon is currently in third place, 13'52" behind the Qatari, but these three drivers are the only ones to finish so far. With the arrival of their pursuers, the last place on the day's podium could change.

15:38 - car
No surprises after 364 km

After 364 km of the special stage (with less than 100 km to the finishing line), Nasser Al-Attiyah still leads ahead of Stéphane Peterhansel, Robby Gordon, Orlando Terranova, Leonid Novitskiy and Giniel de Villiers.

Guerlain Chicherit, who drove at an excellent pace on the first portion of the special, has still not reached the 364-km point. He should pass by around forty minutes after the first group.

14:03 - car
309 - End of section 1: Chicherit third

More than half an hour after the other leaders of the car category, Guerlain Chicherit (Buggy SMG) has just achieved a superb third placed provisional time on completion of the first timed section of the stage.

Suffering from sore arms after a steering problem yesterday, the Frenchman has recovered well and now lies only 6 seconds behind Stéphane Peterhansel, who occupies second place behind Nasser Al Attiyah.

13.42 - car
300 - End of section 1: Al-Attiyah dominant...

With Nani Roma dropping down the field due to being stuck in the dunes and Sainz losing time due to a broken engine, the team-mate of Carlos “El Matador”, Nasser Al-Attiyah (Qatar Red Bull), is out in front in the car special stage with a total time of 2:27'24".

He leads Stéphane Peterhansel (Mini) by 6'24", Robby Gordon (Hummer) by 8'18", Leonid Novitskiy (Mini) by 12'53" and Giniel de Villiers (Toyota) by 14'25". However, Guerlain Chicherit, who started in 24th place this morning, has still not finished the first portion and could sneak into the top 5.

13:07 - car
303 - Sainz close to dropping out?

Carlos Sainz is at a standstill after 181 km of the special stage and is having mechanical problems with his buggy. The Spaniard has signalled that it is an engine problem that neither he nor co-pilot Timo Göttschalk can repair.

13:00 - car
307 - Duel between Novitskiy and Terranova

The Russion driver of Mini No. 307 and the X-Raid team's Argentinean BMW X3 driver are locked in struggle for fifth place. Only 23 seconds separate them on completion of the first timed section (131-km long).

Giniel de Villiers and Pascal Thomasse have indeed lost time in the sand, trailing the stage leader by 13'52" and 16'44" respectively.

12:36 - car
303 - One-two for Al-Attiyah and Sainz at CP2

In this special that promises changes in the top 10, Qatari Nasser Al-Attiyah (Qatar Red Bull) provisionally leads after 131 km ahead of his team-mate Carlos Sainz (Qatar Red Bull), 3'07" behind.

General standings leader Stéphane Peterhansel (Mini) is third, 5'40" behind Nasser, and Robby Gordon (Hummer) is in fourth, 7'08" behind the stage leader.

12:29 - car
308 - Sousa's progress halted

The Portuguese driver on the Great Wall Haval team has also ground to a halt after 75 km, several dozen metres away from Nani Roma who is still stuck in the same place. Pascal Thomasse and his buggy are also stuck in this area

12:19 - car
301 - Out of the frying pan into the fire for De Villiers

After having got stuck near Nani Roma after 75 km, with only a small loss of time as a result, Giniel de Villiers ground to a halt several kilometres further on (after 82 km) alongside other competitors stuck in the sand. However, the Toyota Hilux driver has managed to set off again.

12:04 - car
305 - Roma still stuck, De Villiers has a close shave

Spanish driver Nani Roma is still stopped after 75 km, in a sandy zone that has already caught out other competitors.

It almost cost Giniel de Villiers dearly: he remained at a standstill for several minutes in this very same place.

However, the South African managed to free himself and for the moment has only lost a few minutes.

11:43 - car
305 - Roma in the sand

Nani Roma (Mini) looks to be currently in difficulty in the sand dunes after 75 km of the timed section. The Spanish driver has been at a standstill for several minutes, probably stuck in the sand.

10:43 - car
305 - The Minis are on their way

Nani Roma, followed by Stéphane Peterhansel, has started the day's special stage, on a mainly mixed terrain, apart from ten kilometres of pure sand in the first third.

The duel with the buggies, in particular the one driven by Nasser Al-Attiyah, is starting up again with renewed vigour.

07:25 - car
305 - Heading towards Calama

Nani Roma won yesterday's stage and he has the privilege of leading the convoy along the link stage today to the start of the special stage, followed by team-mate Stéphane Petehansel and American Robby Gordon (Hummer).

After the 291-km stretch of road, they will tackle a timed section of 455 km in length, divided into two sections.

Arica-Calama: getting to grips with the Atacama

On the day's menu, there will be 291 kilometres of link stage then 455 km of special stage for all categories. This evening, at the bivouac in Calama, the rally will have covered almost 3,000 km. For the first special stage on Chilean territory this year there will be a return to the Atacama Desert: sand and dunes make up two thirds of the distance.

However, the stopwatch will be ticking on two distinct portions separated by a neautralised zone, with the second section holding a perhaps unhappy reacquaintance for some with fesh-fesh. In total, the day will be a very long one, to such an extent where the competitors' bodies will start to suffer from the lack of sleep, especially for those who have experienced several mishaps.

A race hierarchy is starting to develop, though whilst Marcos Patronelli is comfortably installed at the top of the quad general standings, the three other categories are much closer. In the bikes behind Olivier Pain, the first 25 riders are all within the same hour.

In the car race, for the top 8 Stéphane Peterhansel is still within reach. In the truck race, the battle is on between Kamaz, Iveco, Man and Tatra… And the comeback that Gerard De Rooy is promising will be one of the high points of the day.
