Dakar 2013  Stage 9  January 14th, 2013
2013 - Argentina/Chile
1st start (GMT-3) : 7:40 AM

18:13 - quad
250 - Overall: Patronelli pads his lead

Although he's no longer hunting for a stage win at any cost, Marcos Patronelli just keeps increasing his buffer at the top of the quad classification, which has grown to 1 h 32'28" as of this evening. Rafal Sonik is sitting pretty in third, 2 h 08'44" down, and Sebastián Palma in fourth, 2 h 54'26" back.

Today's winner Lukasz Laskawiec lies fifth at 3 h 25'45", roughly 20 minutes ahead of Lucas Bonetto, who in turn has less than 6 minutes on Ignacio Flores Seminario.

Finish 2: expanded classification

Rafal Sonik took fourth place in the stage after Lukasz Laskawiec, Marcos Patronelli and Sebastian Husseini, 6'05" down on the winner.

Aussie Paul Smith came in fifth, 7'25" back. Ignacio Casale should keep his sixth place, 9'38" down.

16:28 - quad
252 - Laskawiec on the virtual podium

The Polish driver should be in the Top 3 at the end of this stage, which he's currently leading ahead of Marcos Patronelli. Nevertheless, the hierarchy could still change after Sarel Van Biljon goes through the CP, as he's still in the running to win.

Lucas Bonetto, on the other hand, lost steam towards the end of the special and now sits in a provisional sixth place, 14'47" down.

16:17 - quad
Provisional classification at km 499

Lukasz Laskawiec is still in the lead, but his closest rival is now Marcos Patronelli, 1'39" back, followed by Sebastian Husseini at 3'06", Rafal Sonik at 4'16" and Ignacio Casale at 7'00".

Sarel Van Biljon and Lucas Bonetto have yet to go through this checkpoint. Both of them were within striking distance at the last one.

15:19 - quad
Laskawiec and Bonetto are neck-and-neck

The two leaders in the quad category, Lucasz Laskawiec and Lucas Bonetto, have finished the first third of the second part of the special with just 13" between them! Marcos Patronelli lies in third place at 1'35", with Sebastian Husseini in fourth at 3'08", 41 seconds ahead of Rafal Sonik.

12:28 - quad
277 - Finish 1: Van Biljon moves to the front

The South African's E-ATV dominated the opposition in the first section. He's leading Lucas Nonetto by 21", Lukasz Laskawiec by 31", Marcos Patronelli by 1'39" and Tomás Maffei by 1'58". Poland's Rafal Sonik is sixth at 2'06", twelve seconds ahead of Emirati Sebastian Husseini, while Ignacio Casale is 7'36" down on the leader.

10:52 - quad
252 - CP2: Łaskawiec by a nose

Poland's Łukasz Łaskawiec is in the lead at km 121, 10 seconds ahead of Lucas Bonetto. Third-placed Sarel Van Biljon has a 21-second deficit to the Argentinean and Tomás Maffei lies fourth, 1'58" down on the leader and 35" ahead of Marcos Patronelli.

09:42 - quad
254 - CP1: Casale ahead of Łaskawiec

With eight quads through CP1, 38 kilometres into today's special, Ignacio Casale leads Łukasz Łaskawiec by 39", Lucas Bonetto by 45", Sarel Van Biljon by 1'16" and Marcos Patronelli by 1'23".

07:48 - quad
27 quads on the start line

27 quads were cleared to start today's stage, led by South Africa's Sarel Van Biljon and his E-ATV, who took the win on Saturday. The overall leader is starting in second place, ahead of Sebastián Palma and Sebastian Husseini.

15:30
Tucumán-Córdoba: the longest day

At a whopping 852 kilometres, this stage is the longest in the 2013 Dakar, with a 593 km special for the cars, the motorcycles and the quads. The lucky trucks will only face a 293 km timed section. But it is true that the first stage after the rest day will focus on the trucks, which will go head-to-head in just one of the two parts of the special but will have the rare privilege of opening the way.

Monday is a rather rolling stage which will favour the experts in trajectories. In the other categories, the distance is twice as long due to the addition of a much more technical part where the pilots will have to swerve round curves in the forests. They'll have to watch out for the trees, not least because swift assistance trucks won't be allowed onto this course.

The drivers and riders will have to stay extremely focused throughout. It's also an opportunity to open up gaps in the motorcycle classification, where the top 18 riders lie within less than an hour of each other, as well as the car category, which is still looking for an undisputed master.
