10.01.2013: DAKAR 2013 Stage 6 Thursday January 10th 2013 1st start (GMT-3) : 8:45 AM 09:39 - quad 250 - Patronelli on the defensive

DAKAR 2013  Stage 6 Thursday January 10th 2013
1st start (GMT-3) : 8:45 AM

17:16 - quad
250 - No stress for Patronelli in the general standings

The Argentinean quad rider rode just as he wanted to day, without looking for victory, but keeping up with the pace of the day's winner Chilean Ignacio Casale. The gap between the two men in the general standings this evening stands at 1:11'56", whilst third placed rider Rafal Sonik is 1:48'00 Marcos.

Returning to fourth place, South African Sarel Van Blijon (E-ATV) nonetheless trails the race leader by more than two hours (2:02'14"), as does fifth placed Sebastian Palma (Can-am), 2:33'00" behind.

15:13 - quad
254 - End of section 2: Casale wins at home

Like Francisco Lopez, Ignacio Casale enjoyed his home-coming today. The Chilean rider won this stage with a race time of 5:35'21".

By a margin of 6'36", he beat the leader of the general quad standings, Marcos Patronelli, who defended his overall position. The third placed rider has still not finished.

14:58 - quad
254 - Casale in front of Patronelli after 364 km

The day seems to be smiling on Chilean riders: Ignacio Casale is leading a stage for the first time on the Dakar 2013 in the quad category, ahead of Marcos Patronelli.

Currently fighting for third place are Sarel Van Biljon and Sebastian Husseini, with the South African slightly ahead of the Emirati.

13:35 - quad
265 - End of section 1: Husseini in third

The Emirati rider has ridden his quad into third place in the provisional positions on the special stage. The gap between him and the stage leader, Chilien Ignacio Casale, is 7'58".

Rafal Sonik occupies fifth place behind Sarel Van Biljon but in front of Tomas Maffei. However, he already trails the stage leader by 13 minutes over the first portion of the stage.

12:56 - quad
End of section 1: Casale first

Ignacio Casale, who led half way through the first section, has preserved his advantage at the end of section one with a total time of 2:54'32" and is leads the general standings leader Marcos Patronelli by 7'25".

Sarel Van Biljon occupies current third place and trails the stage leader by 10'27". Tomas Maffei still has not finished the first section, but should arrive in the top 5.

12:26 - quad
265 - Husseini's back!

Dreadfully unfortunate during yesterday's special stage, Sebastian Husseini has made a comeback: after starting in 31st place this morning, he currently occupies second place in the quad special stage, less than four minutes behind the current leader Ignacio Casale.

11:39 - quad
254 - Ignacio Casale leads at CP1

After 131 kilometres, Chilean Ignacio Casale is out in front, leading Argentinean Marcos Patronelli by a little less than a minute. The third place rider Sarel Van Biljon is already almost 8'30" behind the stage leader.

09:39 - quad
250 - Patronelli on the defensive

The leader of the quad general standings, Marcos Patronelli set off as scheduled (at 9.19 AM local time) on Thursday's special stage.

With more than an hour's lead in the general standings, he can allow himself to concentrate on maintaining his advantage over his main rivals, Lukas Laskawiec and Ignacio Casale seront, who have followed him out onto the special stage.

07:22 - quad
250 - The Quads on the move

After the bikes, the leaders after yesterday's stage in the quad category have hit the road. Marcos Patronelli, also leader of the general standings, will be followed by Lukasz Laskawiec and Ignacio Casale. Unlucky Sébastian Husseini, former second placed rider in the general standings, will be bringing up the rear.

Arica-Calama: getting to grips with the Atacama

On the day's menu, there will be 291 kilometres of link stage then 455 km of special stage for all categories. This evening, at the bivouac in Calama, the rally will have covered almost 3,000 km. For the first special stage on Chilean territory this year there will be a return to the Atacama Desert: sand and dunes make up two thirds of the distance.

However, the stopwatch will be ticking on two distinct portions separated by a neautralised zone, with the second section holding a perhaps unhappy reacquaintance for some with fesh-fesh. In total, the day will be a very long one, to such an extent where the competitors' bodies will start to suffer from the lack of sleep, especially for those who have experienced several mishaps.

A race hierarchy is starting to develop, though whilst Marcos Patronelli is comfortably installed at the top of the quad general standings, the three other categories are much closer. In the bikes behind Olivier Pain, the first 25 riders are all within the same hour.

In the car race, for the top 8 Stéphane Peterhansel is still within reach. In the truck race, the battle is on between Kamaz, Iveco, Man and Tatra… And the comeback that Gerard De Rooy is promising will be one of the high points of the day.
