Dakar 2013  Stage 9  January 14th, 2013
2013 - Argentina/Chile
1st start (GMT-3) : 7:40 AM

14:26 - truck
De Rooy slips down the overall

The Kamazs and Tatras now share the spoils at the top of the Truck overall. Russian Eduard Nikolaev (Kamaz) is in the lead with 17'56" on Czech Martin Kolomý (Tatra) and 33'32" on teammate Ayrat Mardeev. Gerard de Rooy (Iveco) is now fourth and has a deficit of 59'56" to make up. Moreover, fifth-placed Andrey Karginov (Kamaz) is just five seconds behind him.

500 - De Rooy drags himself across the finish line

Gerard de Rooy has crossed the finish line of the first section at 1:14 pm local time after struggling with a failing turbo for 4 h 44'10". He's lost 1 h 25'38" to leader Aleš Loprais.

12:39 - truck
503 - Finish 1: Loprais faster than Versluis!

With the first fifteen drivers across the finish line, Aleš Loprais (Tatra) produced a late burst of speed to overtake Pieter Versluis (Man) and beat him by just seven seconds at the end of today's 293 km special!

Further down the stage classification, Andrey Karginov's Kamaz finished 1'36" back, followed by Martin Kolomý's Tatra at 2'13" and Marcel van Vliet's Man at 2'36".

12:24 - truck
500 - De Rooy's problems

The Dutchman, who had to stop for a long while in the special, has been hit by turbo problems. The leaders have already crossed the finish line at km 293, but he's still got 76 km to go.

11:41 - truck
509 - Versluis still in command after 223 km

Pieter Versluis' Man is still in the lead with 70 kilometres to go, followed by Aleš Loprais' Tatra and Andrei Karginov's Kamaz. Marcel van Vliet's Man is currently in fourth place.

11:04 - truck
509 - Versluis holds tight onto the lead

Dutchman Pieter Versluis is still firmly in command of the truck race, with a time of 1 h 58'33" at km 179. He's followed by Aleš Loprais' Tatra (+1'00"), Andrey Karginov's Kamaz (+1'12"), Marcel van Vliet's Man (+1'46") and Martin Kolomý's Tatra (+2'44").

10:12 - truck
502 - Km 73: Van Vliet joins the party

The Dutchman at the wheel of the no. 502 Man has moved into second place, 45" down on the reference time set by teammate Pieter Versluis.

09:55 - truck
500 - De Rooy up and running again

Gerard de Rooy keeps moving on in fits and starts, stopping, starting and stopping again, only to get going a few minutes later. The Dutchman is currently at km 25 of today's special, as the first truck goes through km 120.

09:31 - truck
509 - Km 73: Versluis opens a small gap

Dutchman Pieter Versluis (Man) clocked the best time in the first 63 kilometres, 47" faster than Czech Aleš Loprais' (Tatra) and 1'05" quicker than Russian Andrey Karginov's (Kamaz). No other driver has gone through this point yet.

09:02 - truck
507 - Biasion stops by De Rooy

Gerard de Rooy, who was struck by a mechanical roughly 8 km into today's special, was briefly joined by teammate Miki Biasion, who then left without his team leader. The Dutchman's been working on his truck for over 15 minutes.

08:48 - truck
500 - De Rooy at a standstill!

Gerard de Rooy's Iveco has been hit by mechanical problems 10 kilometres into today's special. It's been sending a "stop" signal for six minutes now.

08:41 - truck
The stopwatch starts ticking for the trucks

The trucks have just entered their own special course for today's special. Their race will take place a bit to the east of the motorcycle, quad and car races. The juggernauts will tackle a 293 km special, while the other categories have to cover 593 km. Nevertheless, there'll be no neutralised sectors on the truck course.

07:25 - truck
It's the trucks' turn to open the road

With a 324 km link section before the start of their special, the focus today is on the trucks, which will go head-to-head on a 293 km course designed especially for them. 65 trucks will start today's stage, with Friday's stage winner, Dutchman Gerard de Rooy, at the helm.

15:30
Tucumán-Córdoba: the longest day

At a whopping 852 kilometres, this stage is the longest in the 2013 Dakar, with a 593 km special for the cars, the motorcycles and the quads. The lucky trucks will only face a 293 km timed section. But it is true that the first stage after the rest day will focus on the trucks, which will go head-to-head in just one of the two parts of the special but will have the rare privilege of opening the way.

Monday is a rather rolling stage which will favour the experts in trajectories. In the other categories, the distance is twice as long due to the addition of a much more technical part where the pilots will have to swerve round curves in the forests.

They'll have to watch out for the trees, not least because swift assistance trucks won't be allowed onto this course. The drivers and riders will have to stay extremely focused throughout. It's also an opportunity to open up gaps in the motorcycle classification, where the top 18 riders lie within less than an hour of each other, as well as the car category, which is still looking for an undisputed master.
