DAKAR 2013  Stage 6 Thursday January 10th 2013
1st start (GMT-3) : 8:45 AM

De Rooy opens a gap in the general standings

After problems on the special stage, Eduard Nikolaev loses ground on the first place held by Gerard De Rooy.

However, 18'40" is still a gap that does not allow the leader to relax, just like the 30'32" that separates the Dutchman from Ayrat Mardeev or the 38'31" between the race leader and Martin Kolomy.

It is from fifth place held by Andrey Karginov that the differential with the leader exceeds the one hour mark: 1:22'32" for the Russian and 1:56'10" for Czech driver Ales Loprais.

The gap is even above two hours for seventh placed Pieter Versluis who is battling with his for position with his team-mate (Man) Marcel Van Vliet.

17:49 - truck
500 - End of section 2: De Rooy tastes victory again

The Dutchman probably did not spare his truck to reel in his opponents on the last part of the route, because in the first half, it was dominated by the Kamaz, Man and Tatra trucks.

Andrey Karginov finsished in second, 34" behind De Rooy, only one second ahead of Pieter Versluis, such was the intensity of the battle. In fourth place, Ales Loprais came in 1'45" after the stage winner.

The gaps were bigger thereafter: 5'55" for fifth placed Miki Biasion, and 7'13" for sixth placed Martin Kolomy. Having led throughout the first section of the special stage, Eduard Nikolaev finished 13'07" behind the day's winner.

17:05 - truck
501 - Nikolaev back on his way

The Russian driver of Kamaz truck No. 501 is now heading to the finish of the special stage. He has around 60 km to cover and is in the region of sixth place, behind the Tatra of Martin Kolomy.

16:41 - truck
501 - Nicolaev at a standstill

The leader of the truck special stage, Eduard Nikolaev, has ground to a halt after 384 km for the last five minutes, probably due to mechanical problems. He will most probably lose the lead of the stage to Ales Loprais since the two were involved in a close struggle.

15:09 - truck
501 - End of section 1: Nikolaev and Loprais almost neck and neck

Twenty one seconds separate the Russian Kamaz driver and the Czech Tatra driver who occupy the first two positions on the truck special stage.

In third place lies the Man truck driven by Pieter Versluis, 1'44" behind the leader, but in front of Gerard De Rooy's Iveco (4'03" behind Nikolaev), the Kamaz belonging to Andrei Karginov (5'28" behind the Russian) and the Iveco of Italy's Miki Biasion (+5'47" behind the stage leader).

14:13 - truck
507 - Ivecos struggling at CP2

The two Iveco trucks driven by Miki Biasion and Gerard De Rooy are struggling in fifth and sixth respectively at CP2 (after 131 km).

The Tatras, Kamaz and Man trucks are leading the stage: Eduard Nikolaev (Kamaz) is in front with a total time of 1:56'58". 39" behind him, Czech driver Ales Loprais (Tatra) occupies second place ahead of the Man truck driven by Pieter Versluis (2'51" behind the stage leader).

Marcel Van Vliet (Man) is fourth, 5'13" behind Nikolaev, followed by Biasion and De Rooy respectively 5'31" and 6'26" behind the Russian.

13:17 - truck
504 - Stacey immobilised

The Dutch driver's Iveco has apparently been badly damaged after an accident (the truck rolled over forwards) after 79 km. The crew are ok, but the truck has been unable to carry on.

12:07 - truck
The Iveco vs. Kamaz battle commences

The trucks have started the special stage: Hans Stacey leads ahead of Eduard Nikolaev, Gerard De Rooy and Ayrat Mardeev. The struggle between the category's elite drivers promises to be titanic…

07:29 - truck
504 - The trucks head toward the special

Hans Stacey (Iveco) is leading the convoy of trucks to the special stage start.

The Dutchman from the De Rooy team set off at 6.41 AM local time, followed by the Kamaz truck driven by Eduard Nikolaev and the Iveco of general standings leader Gerard De Rooy.

Arica-Calama: getting to grips with the Atacama

On the day's menu, there will be 291 kilometres of link stage then 455 km of special stage for all categories. This evening, at the bivouac in Calama, the rally will have covered almost 3,000 km. For the first special stage on Chilean territory this year there will be a return to the Atacama Desert: sand and dunes make up two thirds of the distance.

However, the stopwatch will be ticking on two distinct portions separated by a neautralised zone, with the second section holding a perhaps unhappy reacquaintance for some with fesh-fesh. In total, the day will be a very long one, to such an extent where the competitors' bodies will start to suffer from the lack of sleep, especially for those who have experienced several mishaps.

A race hierarchy is starting to develop, though whilst Marcos Patronelli is comfortably installed at the top of the quad general standings, the three other categories are much closer. In the bikes behind Olivier Pain, the first 25 riders are all within the same hour.

In the car race, for the top 8 Stéphane Peterhansel is still within reach. In the truck race, the battle is on between Kamaz, Iveco, Man and Tatra… And the comeback that Gerard De Rooy is promising will be one of the high points of the day.
