Frustrating qualifying session for David Martinez at Trois-Rivieres

17.08.2008: Frustrating qualifying session for David Martinez at Trois-Rivieres

After qualifying provisionally on the second position on Friday, David Martinez and the Forsythe/Pettit Team ran into bizarre problems during final qualifying and the Mexican driver had to settle for the tenth spot on the grid for Sunday’s race.

During the first half of the session Martinez lapped the historic street circuit with used tires and was comfortably placed among the top positions, everything pointed towards another good result. Half way through the session the 26 year old driver pitted for new tires and quickly returned to the track to continue his fight for pole position.

However after a few laps Martinez noticed that he wasn’t gaining the usual grip and speed expected from new rubber, he continued rolling until the end of the session but was never able to improve his times at the same rate as his fellow competitors who also had new tires. His quickest lap of 59.773s puts him tenth on the grid for Sunday’s race which will take place at 1:30pm eastern.

David Martinez

#7 Axtel/Tecate/Madisa

"I am very disappointed, today we came to the track knowing that we were contenders for pole and now we are tenth. I have been trying to figure out with my team what happened, when we were rolling with old tires it was easy to go fast and we were among the top four, when we put the new tires on I was sure that we were going to be fighting for the front row again.

But after a few laps I just couldn’t match my previous lap times and the car just didn’t feel right. We are not sure what happened, sometimes in racing you just get bad sets of tires and that might be the reason why we couldn’t improve.

Everybody went faster and we could barely repeat our quick time. It really is a shame because my driving has been very good and the team has done a great job and we just don’t have anything to show for it.

Last weekend I passed a bunch of cars and managed to recover a lot of positions, this track is very narrow and passing won’t be nearly as easy but I will do everything I can to put the #7 Axtel/Tecate/Madisa car back up front where it belongs."
