DSK: Motorsport at amateur level must be allowed to take place again soon

For more than 60 years, the DSK (German Sports Drivers Circle) has been promoting popular sport and young talent, and is concerned with safety and environmental work in motor sport.

DSK-President Dr. Karl-Friedrich Ziegahn

In this interview, the President of the Deutscher Sportfahrer Kreis, Dr. Karl-Friedrich Ziegahn, talks about the future of motorsport in general and why he demands that motorsport at amateur level should soon be possible again.

Dr. Ziegahn, due to Covid-19, all racing and other sports and major events have been postponed or cancelled until further notice. How does DSK see the development, especially with regard to amateur and mass sports?

Europe and most of the world community have been at a standstill for several weeks. Major events are not possible in Germany until the end of August, and at the moment hardly anyone dares to make a forecast as to whether we will see spectators at the racetracks again in autumn.

As far as motorsport is concerned, and especially the amateur sector with small rallies, slalom, hill climbs, circuit racing, karting, motocross or enduro, DSK has a very clear position here. These are not major events and usually only have a handful of spectators. As a representative of mass sport, DSK therefore demands a prompt start release. The Conference of Sports Ministers in Germany has already discussed the gradual resumption of sports operations.

It was determined that in both popular and recreational sport - equally for all types of sport - training operations should be permitted again, provided that the sporting activities take place in the "fresh air" and the usual distance and hygiene measures can be observed.

We can guarantee this in motor sport and when DSK is driving in the open air, because we usually sit alone or in pairs in the vehicle, wear a mouthguard under our helmet and observe the distance rules. We are therefore calling on politicians to give amateur motorsport the green light again as soon as possible.

Even before the current health crisis, there were many discussions about the future viability of motor sport. Too expensive, too high CO2 emissions, glorification of frenzy are only some of the arguments of the opponents. What is your answer to this?

First of all, motorsport is simply a competitive sport, like ski racing or the Tour de France. Seen in this light, any competitive sport is unnecessary, because it does not serve the survival of mankind. But there is a desire in our society to look at competitive sport and to see players, i.e. competitive athletes, who want to measure their skills against others.

The future viability of motor sport is based above all on its potential to develop as a technical laboratory. Engineering technology is also a competition. In motorsport, new ideas can be evaluated for their suitability the quickest.

Engineers in motorsport are used to developing and implementing new ideas in the shortest possible time. A very concrete, current example is the merger of the seven UK-based Formula 1 teams, which have pooled their resources to improve existing breathing apparatus and develop new, less invasive ones. Within just a few days, the first successes have already been achieved.

What about developments in the classic automotive sector, for example in environmentally friendly drive technologies?

At the moment we see a variety of drive technologies in automotive engineering and that's a good thing. The motor sports industry will not decide the system question, but it will provide a stage for innovative concepts. From my point of view, it is ultimately irrelevant whether we are driving with electric drives, hydrogen or synthetic fuels.

The motor sports industry has responded to these challenges with a diverse range of products and has even become a pioneer in drive technology thanks to its high efficiency. This is also happening in a wide variety of series.

Formula 1 naturally remains the top class here, but technologies are also developed and used in Formula E and even in smaller series such as the Opel E-Rallye Cup. In this way, motor sport does justice to a sustainable model.

Why does the general social acceptance for motorsport seem to be declining nevertheless?

Social acceptance is not based on technical facts, but on emotions and perceived opinions. As President of the Deutscher Sportfahrer Kreis, I see it as our responsibility to accompany our 13,000 members, the majority of whom are active sports drivers and motor sports enthusiasts, on their way into the future of motorsport with advice and technical advice, but also with a dialogue in society.

The motto of the Deutscher Sportfahrer Kreis is 'Yes to motorsport'. How do you at DSK actively contribute to ensuring that motor sport continues to exist in the future?

Sustainable and climate-neutral motorsport will continue to fascinate us even if we have long since stopped driving public roads ourselves. Equestrian sports (and many other sports) give us examples of how mobility systems and skills that have been discarded for everyday use can 'survive' as a sport and even boom.

A prerequisite for this is that we, the players in motor sports, actively engage with social developments and do not remain stuck in encrusted ideologies. I know many young people who have a lot of fun in a racing simulator or on the race track.

But we'll lose them if we don't credibly demonstrate that the future of the earth is an important concern for us. I am optimistic that we will succeed in this and DSK will contribute to this.
