Defined zones, strict regulations: infection protection at the Nürburgring
To allow for the official test sessions at the Nürburgring to be held during the Covid-19 pandemic, a detailed and effective infection protection plan has been implemented. The most important rule: avoidable contact is to be circumvented as much as possible.
To this end, defined zones are allocated to the organisations involves, such as the manufacturers Audi and BMW or tyre supplier Hankook. Here, sub-zones are in place, for instance for the teams. The manufacturers and their hygiene delegate are responsible for these areas. In every zone, the regular hygiene rules apply, face masks are to be worn permanently.
If required: protection level is increased
Should anyone have to leave his allocated zone and have to work in a different zone, his risk level automatically increases and therefore also the protection level, for instance drivers leaving the zone of their manufacturer and coming into the ITR zone for interviews and media activities. For the person involved, the following rules apply: an FFP 2 mask is mandatory and so are protective gloves.
Just in case: a quick test gives clarification, a pioneering role for the DTM
Every participant in the test sessions, so all personnel on site, is having the body temperature checked by his hygiene delegate. If somebody is showing signs of fever or other typical symptoms, this person is isolated and a quick test, approved throughout Europe, is carried out.
This test can reveal antibodies from the initial immunity reaction of the body immediately after the incubation time, as well as those that are part of the body’s immunological memory. The measured values allow to determine whether a case of Covid-19 affection has occurred urgently or already weeks in advance. The result of the test is available after eight minutes. The DTM is the first race series to have introduced this quick and highly reliable test.

» Quotes – DTM tests Nürburgring, Tuesday
“Today, it was again about getting familiar with the team and the car and getting to know the new mechanics and engineers. Things are going really well: we ended up being fastest today. We are happy.”
Ferdinand Habsburg, Audi
“During the test, it is important to complete the programme, tick off the boxes on the job list, not just for the races here at the Nürburgring, but also for the other race tracks.”
Philipp Eng, BMW
“Compared to last year, the cars have hardly changed. After 20, 30 laps, you are at the level of the previous season again. We have completed many qualifying simulations. A really prolific day.”
Jamie Green, Audi
“Today, it was good fun, we have completed our entire programme again. It was a very intense day and I did a lot of driving. That required a lot of concentration.”
Marco Wittmann, BMW
“Back in the car, at last, a real relief. Not just for me, but for everyone at Audi and in the DTM. Sadly, I broke my collar bone a fortnight ago. That made it a real challenge. I was only able to drive for a couple of hours and I did brief stints.”
Loïc Duval, Audi
“Actually, the plan was for my team mate Loïc Duval to complete the entire test day today and for me to have a day off. Nevertheless, I was available and I was able to drive over half a day like that, racking up many miles again.”
Mike Rockenfeller, Audi
“From 8.30 am until noon and then the action continues at 2 pm. Test days are intense. We have planned some 200 laps per day. After that, you really feel what you have done, to be honest.”
Nico Müller, Audi
“It is a good feeling to be back. It was all pretty relaxed, no technical problems whatsoever. We completed everything from A to Z.”
Lucas Auer, BMW
