The 2023 Formula One (F1) season began on March 5 around the Bahrain International Circuit. Posting an incredible time, Max Verstappen clinched victory, with Pérez coming second and Alonso following in third.
While the season is off to an incredible and action-filled start, there is one race that fans are looking forward to most. On May 28, the iconic Circuit de Monaco located on the spectacular French Riviera will once again host the iconic Monaco F1 competition.

Though the race is highly anticipated, there is much more than just the thrill of watching cars race past for fans to experience should they make the journey to Monaco. In fact, there is so much to do and discover at this destination that visiting simply for the race isn’t enough.
History of F1 in Monaco
Racing along the tight urban streets of Monaco was not first done under the umbrella of Formula One but rather when the first Grand Prix was organized in the city in 1929.
The brainchild of Automobile Club de Monaco president Antony Noghès, the race was organized under the watchful gaze of the then-leader, Prince Louis II. The race was such a hit that it became a regular attraction in the city.
Years later, in 1950, F1 was officially started, with one of the first-ever races taking place in Monaco. While the race wasn’t used in every season of the annual tournament between 1950 and 1955, the iconic Circuit de Monaco has been a fixture in almost every Formula One season since.
It has proven to be a favorite with fans and racers, with Nelson Piquet stating that racing around the track is like ‘riding a bicycle around your living room.’
Circuit de Monaco
The core roads of the circuit are commonly accepted to have been built in 1215 when Monaco as a city was established. However, it was amended to be an entire racing course in 1929, and today is one of the most iconic and recognizable in the world.
Often referred to simply as Monte Carlo because of the large section of the track being positioned in the suburb, the circuit is formed of city streets that are the main pathways for travel during the rest of the year.
To prepare for the F1 season, the track is equipped for racing six weeks before the event. This time ensures the circuit is ready for high-performance cars to race at breakneck speeds while offering safety to drivers and spectators.
The circuit is 3.337 kilometers (2.074 miles) long, and each race consists of 78 laps covering a total distance of 260.286 km (161.734 mi). The current lap record was set by Verstappen in 2018 and stands at 1:14.260.

Things To Do Around Monaco During the F1 Weekend
While the main appeal of a voyage to Monaco is to watch the excitement of the F1 qualifiers and primary race, going to the beautiful city for only that may be a bit of a waste since there are so many other incredible things to do while visiting. Some of these include:
Experience the Thrill of an F1 Car
Visiting the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel and Resort between May 13 and 15 or May 26 and 29 will let you experience what it is like to sit behind the wheel of an F1 car. During this time, the hotel casino offers the unique chance to enjoy an F1 car simulator.
Using a Phoenix Pro F1 Simulator, you can experience the acceleration, view, and braking force as if racing on the Formula One circuit yourself. Sessions are available in 10 or 20-minute intervals and don’t require any booking.

Try Your Luck
If you love the thrill of risk and the reward of outstanding rewards, you can try your hand at any of the great casinos in the city before or after the F1 has concluded. Each of these offers a variety of exciting and luxurious ways to win a windfall.
The most notable of these is Le Casino Monte-Carlo. Located on the edge of the same circuit that racers compete on, the casino has over 950 slots to enjoy and 86 table games to test your skill at, including six poker tables.
Spend a Night on the Town
If you’re looking for a party, look no further than Jimmy’z Monte-Carlo. Known as the best hotspot in town during the F1 weekend, the nightclub offers a terrace and an undeniable night of fun.
Home to some of the best DJs, the club has previously had events hosted by names like Mark Ronson, Bob Sinclair, and Martin Solveig. It also has a dedicated program for each year that is hard to beat.
Party on the Circuit
Whether you visit La Rascasse during the race or after, this is one destination not to be missed. During the day, the bar offers terrace seating located directly on one of the bends of the circuit and is located near one of the most popular grandstands.
At night, the party heats up with live DJs, bands, acoustic duos, and even salsa nights. Here, you can enjoy parties that have been known to spill onto the very track that cars were screeching past just hours earlier.

Take to the Water
With a large portion of the Circuit de Monaco alongside the shoreline, what better place to watch the race from than the comfort of a moored yacht? Thankfully, even if you’re visiting, getting access to one of these isn’t as complicated as you think.
Plenty of rental companies will allow you to book a yacht in Monaco anchored right next to the track. Here, you can enjoy the excitement of the race during the day and then party late into the night after the racers have completed their battle.
