17.11.2008: ProSpeed Competition aiming for a second place in the championship

FIA GT – Round 9: SAN LUIS - Argentina

Whereas the penultimate race of the FIA GT season took place merely a few miles from ProSpeed Competition’s home base, namely at Circuit Zolder, the championship is now heading off to the other side of the world for the final round, and more specifically to San Luis in Argentina.

The FIA GT season comes to an end on 22nd and 23rd November; The culmination of a strong season for Propseed Competition on the brand new Argentinean circuit, with a second place both for the drivers and the teams within their sights.

San Luis is the end point of the FIA GT-championship, which earlier this season started off at Silverstone in April. Since then ProSpeed Competition clinched 2 victories and numerous podium places and providing a strong final weekend could grab a second place in the team final standings, just as ProSpeed-driver Richard Westbrook also has his sights on the vice champion’s title.

Rudi Penders: "Our ambition is that second place, not only as the pinnacle of the season but also because a ticket for Le Mans is linked to it. Le Mans is and will always remain the Mecca when it comes to endurance racing and every team wants to be a part of it.

The gap with BMS Scuderia Italia amounts to 7,5 points, with still 18 points to be shared out, so everything is possible. Following the collective performance in Zolder, which would have been even better had it not been for that underserved collision, I am convinced that we can make our ambition come true."

All in all San Luis will be an exceptional operation, or better still is already an exceptional operation. "That’s correct", Luc Goris, ProSpeed Competition’s technical director commented. "In fact a few hours after the end of the race at Zolder the cars headed off in containers to the port, to be shipped off to Argentina.

The preparation for the race itself will take place there. The entire operation could be compared to what happens in F1 or the WRC and proves that the FIA GT championship holds its place amongst the world’s top championships."

San Luis is located in central Argentina, a country which has 90 times the surface area of Belgium and four times its population. Undoubtedly the most renowned Argentinean driver is Carlos Reuteman, F1 vice world champion and later highly active in his country’s politics. The "Lago potrero de Los Funes" circuit is brand new, and lies in the middle of a mountain range on a lake and is 6,3 kilometres long.

Mikael Forsten will once again be present in Argentina. "Indeed", he confirmed. "During the previous race in Zolder I had to compete in the GP Jumping in my home country and managed to reach the final.

Unfortunately during that final it didn’t turn out as expected and due to a mistake I just missed out on the world cup points. But now it’s off to Argentina, where I want to finish off the season on a high note and help the team clinch that second place because it is important for several reasons."

After San Luis ProSpeed still have the season’s final round of the FIA GT3 championship on their programme, to be held in Dubai.
