Team profiles for the 2007 FIM Supermoto of Nations

29.09.2007: Team profiles for the 2007 FIM Supermoto of Nations

TEAM ITALY

Italy is the winningest team in the history of the event, having won two of the three European editions of the event (2004, 2005), plus the only World edition last year at Bishopscourt. This year’s squad will see Massimo Beltrami (1), Attilio Pignotti (2) and Davide Gozzini (3) compete for the trophy.

Massimo Beltrami has been in the team at each SuperMoto of Nations; Beltrami is a former motocrosser, but he is also an experienced Superider, having clinched several Italian Titles, one Grand Prix win plus three GP podiums.

Attilio Pignotti is another solid Superider, who is experiencing his best season in the FIM SuperMoto World Championship and has now his first chance to compete in the event. Having started with the victory of the season opener at Castelletto di Branduzzo, Pignotti held the red plate until Busca’s round, and will battle it out for the crown in the last GP in Greece.

Like Pignotti, Davide Gozzini will wear the Maglia Azzurra for the first time in his career. Since he moved to the factory TM team, Gozzini has restarted to win GP’s –he has won two so far- and is showing his speed again, after an injury pulled him out of racing a couple of years ago.

Former 500cc Motocross World Champion Andrea Bartolini will be the team manager of the Italian team.

Last year’s result and team (S1/S2/Open): winner; Massimo Beltrami, Ivan Lazzarini, Fabio Balducci

TEAM FRANCE

Team France will be another solid contender this year, with a superb team made of Adrien (5) and Thomas Chareyre (4), and completed by Thierry Van Den Bosch (6). France wants to win again, as they did in 2003 –first edition of the event at European level- with Stéphane Blot, Boris Chambon and Alexandre Thiebault. The 2007 team is actually made by the top three Superiders in the S1 World Championship standings, with Adrien Chareyre being the current leader, followed by VDB and his brother Thomas.

Thomas Chareyre will be steering the factory Husqvarna 450, with which he won his first two Grand Prix’s of his career this year. Despite his young age –19 years old- he is showing great determination to succeed, and has been five times on the podium so far in the season. Thomas was all set on his maiden participation in the event last year, but he injured his wrist and procrastinated his debut to this year.

Adrien Chareyre will be in the team for the fourth consecutive time; like last year, Chareyre will race the S2 class, but he will use a 650cc machine this time. Adrien is currently on top of the points standings of the S1 World Championship, and can give the team a good hand.

Three time SuperMoto World Champion Thierry Van Den Bosch will round off the team in his second participation to the event after his debut in 2005, when France ended second. VDB has won in all categories, and will steer the Aprilia SXV 550, which showed to be a machine capable of winning Grand Prix’s.

Team Manager of France will be Jean Jacques Bruno, a former GP winner in the Motocross World Championship. Together with other former GP Superider Olivier Robert, Bruno manages the Équipe de France (the French Team).

Last year’s result and team (S1/S2/Open): 2nd; Sylvain Bidart, Adrien Chareyre, Aurelien Rolland

TEAM GREAT BRITAIN

With last year’s team, Great Britain brought home a solid and encouraging third place, which was the reason why the whole team was confirmed this year. But Sam Warren (7), Matthew Winstanley (8) and Christian Iddon (9) want to improve on last year’s result.

Riding for an almost private team, Sam Warren has done only a few GP appearances, but has been a regular competitor in his domestic series, where he has won Championships and rounds. Being an Aprilia Superider, and enjoying some support from Aprilia UK, Warren will be on an SXV 450.

Matthew Winstanley is another National Championship winner, but the Wigan Whippet has also won one Grand Prix moto, in Greece 2006. Winstanley has not won again, but he is still a solid Superider who can be a good team worker this weekend.

Christian Iddon is by now the most successful Superider in the team. Winning his maiden GP this year at a wet Torino, Iddo made it again in the latest round at Busca, and will be full of confidence and experience this year, which is his second season with Aprilia.

Like last year, the team head will be expert David Dearden.

Last year’s result and team (S1/S2/Open): 3rd; Sam Warren, Matthew Winstanley, Christian Iddon

TEAM ITALY JUNIOR

At Bishopscourt last year, Italy Junior finished right out of the podium, being the best Junior Team in the first edition of the event. Having all GP Superiders this year, with Marco Dondi (10), Andrea Occhini (11) and Elia Sammartin (12), the Italian squad hopes in a podium finish.

Marco Dondi will be at the Nations for the second time in his career; after a few appearances in the World series in 2006, Dondi is now a regular Grand Prix Superider.

Andrea Occhini completed a solid Junior career, finishing often in the top five of the National and European series, before debuting in the World Championship in 2006, racing the second half of that season. Since then, he rides a Husaberg machine.

Elia Sammartin had a storming start to the European Championship this year at Castelletto, winning the S3 round, but eventually moved to the S2 class of the World Championship. Sammartin is still struggling a bit, but this maiden participation in the Nations will bring him new motivations.

Former 500cc Motocross World Champion Andrea Bartolini will be the team manager of the Italian team.

Last year’s result and team (S1/S2/Open): 4th; Riccardo Cavazzana, Marco Dondi, Alex Serafini
