FORMULA RENAULT 2.0 Eurocup - Estoril – Race 1- Kobayashi keeps his run going

FORMULA RENAULT 2.0 Eurocup - Estoril – Race 1- Kobayashi keeps his run going

01.10.2005: FORMULA RENAULT 2.0 Eurocup - Estoril – Race 1- Kobayashi keeps his run going

Kamui Kobayashi (Prema Power Team) took his third consecutive win in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. The Japanese driver is now almost certain of finishing second in the overall standings. With second place in the race, Michael Ammermüller (Jenzer Motorsport) did enough to remain on course to win the title tomorrow evening. Yann Clairay's (SG Formula) third place was not really the result he needed in terms of the championship.

Kamui Kobayashi got away well, but he had to move across the racing line twice to hold off Filipe Albuquerque, who was pushing very hard. Michael Ammermüller managed nonetheless to get past Albuquerque on the first lap. The talented young Portuguese driver then found himself challenged by Yann Clairay, who had already got past his teammate, Carlo Van Dam.

The leader wasted no time in moving clear of the chasing pack. After two laps he was already 1.9 seconds ahead of Ammermüller. Clairay managed to snatch third place from Albuquerque.

Clairay then went on a charge, taking the fastest race lap in the process. Albuqerque could see the field catching him up, led by Carlo Van Dam and Dima Raikhlin. Just behind, Patrick Rocha had to hold off the attentions of Alan Hellmeister. One Brazilian does not give up his place to a fellow Brazilian without a fight!

As the race went past the halfway stage the leading positions seemed destined not to change any further. Back in the main field, Michael Aleshin (Lukoil Racing Team) and Cyndie Allemann (SL Formula Racing) run into one another.

On lap 11, Hellmeister finally managed to overtake Rocha. Much further back, Pippa Mann (Comtec Racing) moved past Mihai Marinescu (Prema Power Team). The young British driver had however got her race off to a poor start when she ran through a gravel trap.

The final piece of race action involved a clash between Marco Frezza (Euronova Racing) and Pierre Ragues (Epsilon Sport).

Kamui Kobayashi: «It's a good day for me because I have picked up a lot of points with a pole position and a win. I have to keep in good form tomorrow.»

Michael Ammermüller: «I have done what I set out to do by picking up twelve points today. I have to collect a similar number of points tomorrow to win the title. But a lot of things can happen, as we have seen in the last three races. The title hasn't been won yet. We'll see what happens tomorrow.»

Yann Clairay: «It's a good result after a poor weekend in Donington. It was difficult to do better starting as I did on the third row. I had a good race and I also picked up the point for the fastest lap, which is good. I'll start in pole tomorrow, so I hope to win.»
