Revitalisation of the national Formula 3 remains the goal

Revitalisation of the national Formula 3 remains the goal

29.09.2015: The members of the Board used the racing weekend at Nürburgring to receive

The members of the Board used the racing weekend at Nürburgring to receive direct feedback both at this year’s annual meeting as well as an additional briefing with team principals.

The result: The Formula 3 Association is set up well and would be able to revitalise a German Formula 3 series straight away. The event is currently taking a break due to the fact that the FIA limited the regulations for national Formula 3 series to such an extent that it was no longer possible to contest the cup.

Those requirements by the FIA have not changed, neither for the current nor the coming season. The goal of the Formula 3 Association continues to be the support of national Formula 3 sports as well as the revitalisation of an active racing series.

The Board’s report at the annual meeting made it clear that the Formula 3 Association is ready for a relaunch of the German Formula 3 anytime. A solid financial foundation is maintained. There are also enquiries from teams and drivers about a continuation of the series on a regular basis. This, however, remains unclear. There have been no changes in governance, nor are any expected for 2016. Consequently, a return to active racing remains to be open.

Position between Formula 4 and Formula 3 European Championship

The ATS Formula 3 Cup defined itself as the general qualification for motorsports. After contesting Formula 4, young drivers switch to the national Formula 3 where they keep honing their skills.

This prepares them for the next step in their career. Currently, the 2014 Champion, Markus Pommer, is contesting the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. And the 2013 Champion, Marvin Kirchhöfer, enjoys success in the GP3 Series.

The preliminary end of the ATS Formula 3 Cup interrupted a twelve-year success story. The annual meeting included a discussion about a variety of prospects for the future, which could lead to a revitalisation of the series. Now it is up to the FIA.

Goal: Revitalisation of the German Formula 3

Motorsports as a whole will be facing big challenges in the upcoming years; this was the consensus view among the team principals and the members of the Board at the briefing following the annual meeting. The FIA announced a change of the chassis for 2018.

It remains to be seen where the current chassis will be allowed to be used then. This decision is still to be made by the FIA. However, it is a fact that the team principals in attendance want to see a revitalisation of a national Formula 3 series.

The Board of the Formula 3 Association made it clear in both meetings: The German Formula 3 is to continue to satisfy high quality standards and to offer young drivers from all over the world an attractive platform with reasonable value for money.

The Board of the Formula 3 Association will continue to make an effort to support young Formula 3 drivers in Germany and to revitalise the German Formula 3 in the near future.
