This weekend, the Southern-French city of Pau will be the venue of the third and fourth rounds of the new FIA European Formula 3 Championship. The majority of the drivers racing in this year’s Formula 3 Euro Series have opted for also contesting the 71st Grand Prix de Pau.
In 2011, that year’s Formula 3 Euro Series Marco Wittmann driver won the race at the partly tight and extremely selective street circuit located at the foot of the Pyrenees, thus giving the French Team Signature a highly acclaimed home win.
This year, a total of 25 drivers will try hard to become the successor of the German - among them 12 Formula 3 Euro Series drivers. William Buller (Carlin) and the two new teams, URD Rennsport and GU-Racing with their drivers Lucas Wolf (URD Rennsport) and Philipp Ellis (GU-Racing), are the only ones that opted for doing without making the trip to Southern France.
Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam) has fond memories of last year’s event in Pau. The Spaniard who travels to Pau as championship leader in both the Formula 3 Euro Series and the FIA European Championship finished third, in 2011.
His compatriot Carlos Sainz (Carlin), currently second in the Euro Series Drivers’ Championship, is determined to reduce the gap to Juncadella, in Pau - and the same applies to Sweden’s Felix Rosenqvist (Mücke Motorsport) who currently holds third championship position. Both Sainz and Rosenquist will contest their first Formula 3 race at the street circuit.
Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam): “I really look forward to the Grand Prix de Pau. Both the circuit and the city are great and last year, things went rather well for me. As the track is very tight and offers virtually no overtaking opportunities, securing a good grid position and making a good start is particularly important, here. It gores without saying that winning here is my goal - and I think realising this goal should be possible.”
