Fourth-placed Perez is the toast of Silverstone

Arden Silverstone race 1

Sergio Perez put in one of the finest drives of the GP2 season at Silverstone today. Condemned to 25th place on the grid after engine problems denied him the opportunity to set a qualifying time, the Telmex Arden International driver rose to 14th during a scintillating opening lap and had annexed 13th spot by the time he made the race’s first scheduled tyre stop, on lap seven.

Running in clear air when he rejoined, he was comfortably the fastest man on the track and that enabled him to make significant gains. By the time most of the leaders had pitted, the Mexican was up to seventh – and right on the tail of title contender Romain Grosjean (Barwa Addax). Perez dispatched the Franco-Swiss driver on the 16th of 36 laps and moved up to fourth when two of the drivers ahead finally made their tyre stops. Maintaining his blistering pace to the end, Perez closed on the cars ahead but just failed to dislodge Nico Hülkenberg (ART).

Team-mate Edoardo Mortara’s afternoon was also dramatic – but for all the wrong reasons. GP2 Asia champion Kamui Kobayashi tipped the Italian into a spin during the opening lap and both drivers retired on the spot.

Sergio: “When I woke up this morning I knew it was going to be a difficult day. I knew the car was quick, though, and was confident that a top-ten finish was achievable – my engineers have given me great support and we always help each other. I gave it my best on every lap and it turned out to be an exciting race. I made a really good start and the pit stop was amazing. I pushed hard to pass as many cars as possible and motivate the team as well as myself. It was a very positive afternoon.

“Tomorrow’s race is important and I’m sure I’ll be just as quick as I was today, so starting from fifth should put me in good shape. For now, though, I’m really pleased with today’s result and my first points of the season.”

Edoardo:
“I was hoping for a top-eight finish, as I do every race, and I felt even more optimistic after a strong start. I made up several places, but Kobayashi then ran into me and put us both out of the race. It’s frustrating that this happened after just a few corners… I’m very disappointed and really don’t know what to expect tomorrow.”
