03.03.2007: Mexico City 400k - Race Notes

Welcome to Round 2 of the 2007 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve, the Mexico City 400k at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. The scheduled distance for today's race on the 2.5-mile road course is 100 laps (400 km/250 miles), and the race is subject to a two-hour and 30-minute time limit.

· Colin Braun starts from the pole position in the No. 75 Krohn Racing Pontiac Riley, with Jon Fogarty starting from the outside of the front row in the No. 99 GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing Pontiac Riley. Nick Ham is starting on the GT pole position in the No. 70 SpeedSource Mazda RX-8 with Leh Keen alongside in the No. 85 Farnbacher Loles Motorsports Porsche GT3.

The No. 87 Farnbacher Loles Motorsports Porsche GT3 being co-driven by Dirk Werner and Bryce Miller will start from the rear of the GT grid due to an infraction revealed in post-qualifying technical inspection.

2:40 p.m. - Pit lane opens for recon laps. The pit lane will be open for 10 minutes.

2:50 p.m. - Pit lane is closed and all cars have taken their grid positions.

3:08 p.m. - The command to start engines has been given, and the machines have fired on the grid.

3:09 p.m. - The pace car rolls of the grid for two pace laps.

3:15 p.m. - GREEN FLAG waves to begin the race with No. 76 BRAUN leading the field in Turn 1. GREEN FLAG for the GT class with No. 70 HAM leading the field in Turn 1.

Lap 1 - 0:46 (3:16 p.m.) - No. 76 KROHN spins in Turn 1 but continues.

Lap 2 - 2:14 (3:17 p.m.) - No. 01 ROJAS, who started third, is now running fifth after being passed by No. 05 AUBERLEN and No. 10 MAGNUSSEN in Turn 1 of the first lap.

Lap 4 - 4:54 (3:20 p.m.) - GT polesitter No. 70 HAM is now running fourth, with No. 85 KEEN leading No. 74 LUX and No. 72 SWARTZBAUGH.

Lap 6 - 7:47 (3:23 p.m.) - No. 41 COSMO heads behind the wall.

Lap 8 - 9:53 (3:25 p.m.) - No. 3 LEWIS passes No. 01 ROJAS in Turn 8 for seventh, but ROJAS passes LEWIS in Turn 1 to regain the position.

Lap 10 - 13:15 (3:28 p.m.) - No. 61 WILKINS puts two wheels over the line coming out of Turn 8. In GT, No. 70 HAM is back up running second.

Lap 11 - 15:03 (3:30 p.m.) - No. 6 ZOGAIB puts two wheels over in Turn 8.

Lap 14 - 18:05 (3:33 p.m.) - GT LEAD CHANGE: No. 70 HAM passes No. 85 KEEN for the class lead.

Lap 15 - 20:44 (3:35 p.m.) - After contact from behind by No. 06 REESE, No. 07 COLLINS and No. 74 LUX make contact in Turn 1 and spin off-track. Both machines continue. No. 06 REESE is slow on-course with right-front damage.

Lap 17 - 22:45 (3:37 p.m.) - No. 21 CONNOLLY spins in Turn 8 but continues. No. 06 REESE comes down pit road for repairs. No. 76 KROHN puts two wheels over in Turn 8.

Lap 20 - 26:51 (3:42 p.m.) - Corner workers report heavy smoke coming from No. 59 FRANCE.

Lap 22 - 29:26 (3:44 p.m.) - No. 59 FRANCE pits (HAYWOOD in) but speeds on pit road. Crew members push the machine behind the wall.

Lap 26 - 35:45 (3:50 p.m.) - No. 01 ROJAS, No. 58 LAW and No. 3 LEWIS are nose-to-tail for sixth place overall. Race leader No. 75 BRAUN holds a 7.455-second lead over No. 99 FOGARTY.

Lap 29 - 39:53 (3:55 p.m.) - No. 05 10 MAGNUSSEN is pressuring No. 05 AUBERLEN for the third position overall, but AUBERLEN holds the position.

Lap 31 - 42:49 (3:57 p.m.) - No. 77 GOETERS puts two wheels over in Turn 8. No. 05 AUBERLEN has heavy smoke and damage on the right-rear after contact from behind by No. 10 MAGNUSSEN. AUBERLEN pits and ALHADEFF gets in. MAGNUSSEN is penalized a "drive through" for avoidable contact.

Lap 35 - 47:46 (4:02 p.m.) - No. 10 MAGNUSSEN serves the "drive through" penalty.

Lap 39 - 55:03 (4:10 p.m.) - No. 3 LEWIS spins off-course momentarily but continues.

Lap 41 - 56:47 (4:11 p.m.) - No. 15 NASTASI spins off-course but continues. No. 39 FITTIPALDI is slow on-course and continues to its pit (BRIX in). The crew pulls the engine cover off the machine before pushing the car behind the wall. Reports are of a broken half-shaft. No. 15 NASTASI puts four wheels over the line in Turn 8.

Lap 47 - 1:04:04 (4:19 p.m.) - No. 11 DUNO is off-course momentarily but continues.

Lap 48 - 1:05:29 (4:20 p.m.) - No. 10 MAGNUSSEN pits and hands the car to No. 10 ANGELELLI. No. 11 DUNO pits and CARPENTIER gets in.

Lap 52 - 1:11:57 (4:27 p.m.) - No. 58 LAW passes No. 01 ROJAS for third place. No. 01 ROJAS pits and PRUETT gets in.

Lap 55 - 1:15:16 (4:30 p.m.) - GT-leader No. 70 HAM pits and hands the car to No. 70 TREMBLAY. No. 87 WERNER is the new class leader. No. 91 MATTHEWS pits and GOOSSENS gets in. No. 23 BERGMEISTER pits and LONG gets in.

Lap 56 - 1:17:58 (4:33 p.m.) - OVERALL LEAD CHANGE: No. 75 BRAUN comes down pit road (PAPIS in), handing the lead to No. 99 FOGARTY. GT-leading No. 87 WERNER pits (MILLER in), giving the lead to No. 07 COLLINS. No. 60 PATTERSON pits and NEGRI gets in. No. 3 LEWIS pits and RUHLMAN gets in.

Lap 60 - 1:23:49 (4:38 p.m.) - OVERALL LEAD CHANGE: No. 99 FOGARTY pits (GURNEY in), handing the lead to No. 75 PAPIS. No. 23 LONG puts two wheels over the line in Turn 8.

Lap 61 - 1:25:18 (4:40 p.m.) - No. 58 LAW pits to hand control to DONOHUE.

Lap 64 - 1:30:05 (4:45 p.m.) - No. 77 GOETERS pits and hands control to GIDLEY.

Lap 67 - 1:34:10 (4:49 p.m.) - No. 10 ANGELELLI puts four wheels over the line in Turn 8.

Lap 71 - 1:38:58 (4:54 p.m.) - No. 91 GOOSSENS and No. 39 BRIX make contact in Turn 1 but continue. The No. 91 machines has heavy right-front damage. Both cars make pit stops. No. 91 GOOSSENS is penalized a "drive through" for avoidable contact.

Lap 75 - 1:45:40 (5:01 p.m.) - No. 85 FARNBACHER puts two wheels over the line in Turn 8.

Lap 76 - 1:47:05 (5:02 p.m.) - No. 39 BRIX goes behind the wall with crash damage.

Lap 77 - 1:47:56 (5:03 p.m.) - No. 43 JOE NONNAMAKER and No. 66 LALLY put two wheels over the line in Turn 8. It is NONNAMAKER's second warning.

Lap 78 - 1:50:30 (5:05 p.m.) - No. 21 LEWIS heads behind the wall. The No. 39 Porsche retires with crash damage.

Lap 80 - 1:51:40 (5:06 p.m.) - No. 19 VALIANTE puts two wheels over the line in Turn 8.

Lap 85 - 1:59:02 (5:14 p.m.) - No. 99 GURNEY has pulled within 2.249 seconds of race leader No. 75 PAPIS.

Lap 87 - 2:02:10 (5:17 p.m.) - No. 05 ALHADEFF pits and hands control back to AUBERLEN.

Lap 88 - 2:03:27 (5:18 p.m.) - OVERALL LEAD CHANGE: No. 99 GURNEY passes No. 75 PAPIS in Turn 6 for the overall lead.

Lap 89 - 2:04:38 (5:19 p.m.) - No. 19 VALIANTE puts two wheels over the line in Turn 8 for his second warning.

Lap 94 - 2:11:25 (5:26 p.m.) - No. 99 GURNEY holds just a 1.077-second lead over No. 75 PAPIS.

Lap 96 - 2:13:31 (5:28 p.m.) - OVERALL LEAD CHANGE: No. 75 PAPIS passes No. 99 GURNEY on the front straightaway for the overall lead after GURNEY was slowed by lapped traffic coming out of Turn 8.

Lap 98 - 2:16:53 (5:31 p.m.) - OVERALL LEAD CHANGE: No. 75 PAPIS spins off-course in Turn 5 but continues, giving the lead to No. 99 GURNEY.

Lap 100 - 2:18:59 (5:34 p.m.) - WHITE FLAG waves to give the drivers one more lap around the circuit.

Lap 100 - 2:20:28 (5:35 p.m.) - CHECKERED FLAG waves to end the race with No. 99 GURNEY/FOGARTY winning, followed by No. 75 PAPIS/BRAUN and No. 10 ANGELELLI/MAGNUSSEN. In GT, No. 70 TREMBLAY/HAM are the winners.

Nick Ham Claims First Career Rolex Series Class Pole in Mexico City
