After two races with TCR Europe, the KUMHO TCR World Tour will run in a one-off event at the Autodromo Vallelunga Piero Taruffi near Rome this weekend.
A number of front-runners from the TCR Italy championship past and present will compete alongside the world’s top touring car drivers, at what is considered to be one of the best circuits for touring car racing in Europe.
The drivers’ standings are led by Norbert Michelisz, driving for BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse, while a very strong round for Yann Ehrlacher two weeks ago at Spa-Francorchamps has brought the Cyan Racing Lynk & Co driver right into contention, now just three points behind. Ehrlacher will be running with the maximum compensation weight this weekend however after his fast qualifying performances in Belgium, as will his teammate Ma Qing Hua.
This will give the Hyundai team, as well as the Comtoyou Racing-run Audi cars, a chance to score good points this weekend; same for the two relatively unballasted Lynk & Co cars of Thed Björk and Santiago Urrutia.
ALM Motorsport will be back with two Honda Civic Type R FL5 cars, with Néstor Girolami now joined by TCR Italy regular Mattias Vahtel, the 20-year-old from Tallinn, Estonia. The other TCR Italy guest stars include this year’s championship front-runner Marco Butti, who will race in a third BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse Elantra; and last year’s championship contender Kevin Ceccon, who joins Aggressive Team Italia in another Elantra.
SP Compétition brings its CUPRA Leon Competición cars for former TCR Europe champion Aurélien Comte and Sylvain Pussier, meaning the Spanish marque is represented in the KUMHO TCR World Tour for the first time, while Comtoyou Racing will also field a pair of Audi car for its TCR Europe race winners Kobe Pauwels and John Filippi alongside the team’s full season regulars Rob Huff and Frédéric Vervisch.
The action gets underway with practice at 17:30 on Friday and 9:05 Saturday, qualifying at 14:05 on Saturday afternoon, with both races on Sunday: Race 1 at 11:10 and Race 2 at 16:00, all times local (CEST).
