Middle East Electricity awards recognise best in Mena Power Industry

More than 1000 people gathered in Dubai last night to recognise the industry’s outstanding power projects and energy personalities in the Middle East and North Africa region at the Middle East Electricity Awards 2014.
The awards are a part of Middle East Electricity and Solar Middle East which run until 13 February at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The winners were officially honoured last night at a prestigious gala dinner. An independent jury of industry experts selected 25 shortlisted entries across 8 categories from a record amount of submissions.
Anita Mathews, Director of Informa Energy Group, organisers of Middle East Electricity, said: “The awards encourage best practice and recognise the outstanding achievements of individuals whose projects have set new standards of excellence and inspired others to follow.
“The judges were very impressed with the wide range of entries this year. The scope of work presented for critique was diverse, thought-provoking and is a testament to the health of the industry, as well as the growth we can expect to see in the coming years.”
Two of the most coveted awards at this year’s event were the Power Personality of the Year, and Green Champion of the Year. His Excellency Abdulla Saif Al Nuaimi, Advisor, Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA), was this year’s Power Personality for his significant contribution in the regional energy sector.
His Excellency Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality was awarded as Green Champion of the Year for his pioneering contribution to a number of green initiatives within the Emirate.
The Power Project of the Year Award, won by Altaaqa Global Cat Rental Power for the 54 mega-watt power plant installed in Aden, Yemen, kicked off proceedings, and the jury was united in appraising it as one of the most revolutionary energy projects in the Middle East region.
Ahmad Matar Khalifa Alsuwaidi from Dubai Aluminum received the award for the Young Engineer of the Year, while the Lighting Project of the Year went to the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport for the Ras Al Akhdar Bainoonah Street Lighting project.
Another part of the night’s proceedings was the Solar Project of the Year category, awarded to First Solar for Phase 1 of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park project.
Middle East Electricity is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai. Supported by the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA), and Dubai Municipality, the 39th edition of the region’s foremost power event is the largest ever, covering twelve halls and over 5,000 square metres of exhibition space.
One of the world’s largest energy events, Middle East Electricity is co-located with the second edition of Solar Middle East. The 2014 edition is partnered with Saudi Energy in Riyadh, Power Nigeria in Lagos and Africa Electricity in Johannesburg. The 2015 edition will take place from 3-5 February at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
