Trek-Segafredo is pleased to announce that Belgian Edward Theuns will remain with the team through 2021. Theuns, 28, rode for Trek-Segafredo in 2016 and 2017, winning stages in the Binck Bank Tour, the Baloise Belgium Tour, and the Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey, and after one year with Team Sunweb, returned for the 2019 season.

Edward Theuns: "I am thrilled to renew my contract with Trek-Segafredo. After being away for a year, I noticed right away that the grass wasn't greener on the other side of the hill, so I was happy to come back this year, and I am even more thrilled to stay for another two years with Trek-Segafredo.

This team feels a bit like family to me, and it's like coming home. I like the atmosphere in the team, I like the people in the team, I know everybody, and everyone knows me, which is a real advantage. I also really appreciate the opportunities I get within the team. In the past that worked really well, so why not in the future too?"

"As for my goals and ambitions, I hope to win as many races as I can for the team. I know that in the Classics we have a strong leader with Jasper Stuyven and Mads Pedersen coming up as a young, strong rider.

I am convinced that next year we will have a strong team for the Classics again and I am confident I can play a useful role in that and take advantage of my position in the team: for example, in trying to go earlier with smaller breaks, as I did in Gent-Wevelgem this year. I think this is a role that suits me really well, and that is also a great added value to the team in the Classics.

"Apart from the Classics, I hope to be able to make some sprints throughout the year. I didn't do a lot of sprints in the past two years, so I want to get that rhythm going again. I feel that when I can sprint, I can do a good job, just like the day I got second in Adriatica-Ionica, and again here in the Binck Bank Tour first stage.

I just need to gain back some experience and get used to sprinting again after almost two years without real opportunities for me to sprint. I also can help the GC riders in Grand Tours on the flat and windy stages, especially with positioning towards key points in the race. I did that in the past already with Alberto Contador at the Vuelta (2017) and with Tom Dumoulin at the Tour de France last year, so I think that's a role that suits me well too."

Luca Guercilena, General Manager Trek-Segafredo:
"It's nice to have Eddy back in the team with us. With Edward, we can play different cards. He's a very valuable rider for our Classics squad, but he is also one of the fastest guys on the team, as he has proven by winning bunch sprints in hard races. On top of that, he's an amiable and witty guy; he can raise the team spirit when needed, and he has a positive impact on the atmosphere within the team."
