Skujins to be joined by Liepins at Trek-Segafredo




Trek-Segafredo is pleased to announce that Toms Skujins has extended his contract through 2020, entering his third season with Trek-Segafredo. Joining the popular Latvian beginning January 1 will be compatriot Emils Liepins, giving the small east-European country a somewhat dominant presence in the USA registered WorldTour team. 



Toms Skujins: "From day one Trek Segafredo staff and riders have been amazing in welcoming me, so it is a huge pleasure to stay with the team at least till the end of 2020. My first Tour de France was on this team, my first national titles in both road race and individual time trial have been on this team and I got to ride the Team Time Trial World Championships (where Trek-Segafredo finished 7th) in Innsbruck with these guys so there are a lot of very good memories and it's all thanks to the trust the team has put in me."
 


"There are still some good races I'm looking forward to this year, and I know we will put on some good racing for the fans. Of course, next year is already on my mind a little too and who knows, maybe it's time to go see what the fuss is about at the Giro. However, one way or another it will be a fun 2020 because not only I will be riding for Trek Segafredo yet again, but there will be a human on the team I can speak Latvian with, so I don't get so homesick."



Emils Liepins, 26, is currently riding with Belgium Pro Continental team Wallonie-Bruxelles. He won a stage in Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali earlier this year and is thrilled to join the team for the next two seasons:




"Toms is right, it will be cool to be with another Latvian on the team and be able to speak our language. But, more importantly, I am very excited to join one of the best teams in the world! Trek-Segafredo in his current and previous versions was my favorite team when I was a child, and I can barely believe I will be part of this team next year, and I feel very honored about it. I look forward to show my best qualities on the road and will give it my all!"




Luca Guercilena, General Manager at Trek-Segafredo: "Emils Liepins is a strong and fast guy and a versatile rider that can ride in support in every type of race: he can help in the Classics but can also do a lead-out and protect our GC riders in smaller stage races.



As for Toms, we all know his qualities as a rider and a person. He is popular amongst fans, and he has shown to be a gutsy rider that is not scared to leave it all out on the road, an attitude that has proven to be fruitful and leading him to the victory in more than one occasion. I am happy to have both Emils and Toms on the team for next year, and I am confident they will be of great value."
