Mads Pedersen reactions after he sprints to victory in Stage 13

Stage 13 was a tailor-made finish for Mads Pedersen. No one stood a chance against his power in the uphill sprint. Pascal Ackermann tried by jumping early, but Mads was quick to grab his wheel, and from there, it was game over.

The 26-year-old Dane powered around Ackermann and even had time to look behind before he raised his arms to the sky. Trek-Segafredo came for a stage win, and after Mads finished three times as runner up, in Stage 13 they finally got it.

Mads Pederson quotes:

“This is super nice. We knew that this final was super good for me, and the boys were super focused all day. I am just happy that I could finally get the win and give back the boys something back for all the work they did so far -it’s really nice for all of us.”

“Alex (Kirsch) delivered me in the last corner, so there was still 800m to go, so it was perfect that Jumbo-Visma made a good hard tempo and that Pascal Ackerman jumped early. It meant I could jump with him. It was a long, long sprint – a full sprint, so a 330m sprint today.”

“We came here for a stage win and now we have one. Now we keep fighting to get one. more. It’s super nice to have a comfortable lead in the jersey, but it still would have been nice to have Sam here to keep fighting for the jersey. if we keep fighting for the stages we will see how it goes.”

On 3 times 2nd:
“I don’t care about the 2nd places. I am just super happy that I finally won a stage and could give the whole team, not only riders but also the staff, this victory. Everyone was really committed.

On not doing Worlds
: “I have a life next to cycling and I have a family that I have not seen a lot this season and at one point you have to call it a day. If I did Worlds, I would have to go straight from here to Australia, it would mean another seven weeks away, and mentally not a great idea, I am super happy and proud of my season so far.  If I take it a step too far over the limit, it may affect next season, so  we made the decision not to go and be happy with the season we had so far and go home to see my wife again and that is also really nice.”

“We put pressure on the whole team today, and in the end, I had to deliver. A bit of pressure is always good, and it can give you an extra 10% in a finale like this. I like pressure like this and I like to give the guys back what they were working for. In the end, a pretty good day.”
