Rallying legend shares secrets of his success at "Meet the Career Gurus" event during GETEX

Mohammed Ben Sulayem: inspiration for students.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the Arab world’s most prolific winner over the last three sporting decades, will send a warning to students in Dubai on Wednesday that there is no easy path to successful career building.

Sulayem, who scored more international rally victories than any other driver in a remarkable career, will drive home the message that hard work and dedication are the keys to success in business, as they are in the sporting arena.

"The best advice I can give to anyone planning a career in any field is that there’s no substitute for hard work," said Sulayem, who will be addressing students Wednesday at a "Meet the Career Gurus" event being staged as part of GETEX, the Middle East and Asia’s largest education fair.

"Extra talent gives people an edge, but you don’t achieve success unless you’re prepared to invest your time, your energy, your total commitment to getting the job done to the best of your ability."

Sulayem, President of the Emirates Automobile and Touring Club for the UAE, is one of nine highly successful personalities from different sectors who will share their life experiences, and secrets of their success, with students.

The four-day "Meet the Career Gurus" event is being organised for GETEX at Dubai International Exhibition Centre by Career Enhancement Opportunities (CEO), the Dubai Knowledge Village-based Education and Corporate Training specialists, who also offer parents financial planning advice for their children’s higher education needs.

"As well as being a sporting legend, Mohammed Ben Sulayem is also a highly successful businessman, and this is an excellent opportunity for ambitious young people to discover inspiration and use it to motivate themselves for their life’s future," said Safdar Rashid, managing director of CEO.

Sulayem, who was FIA Middle East rally champion a remarkable 14 times, has matched his success as a driver with his achievements as an event organiser, administrator, and businessman.

He developed the UAE Desert Challenge into a leading world championship cross country rally, and has transformed the newly re-named Emirates Automobile and Touring Club, which oversees motor sport in the UAE and provides a range of services to travelling motorists, since becoming its President last April.

He has also built his own group of companies which includes ASTECO, one of the UAE’s leading property management companies, Alandalus School in Dubai, the UAE Motorcycle Club, the Arabian Automobile Association, a 24-hour road assistance service, and Ben Sulayem Performance, a specialist car tuning facility.

"I’ve made mistakes in my career," he said. "But I always tried to turn a negative situation into a positive one. Some people react badly to career setbacks. Some change direction completely because they can’t face the prospect of failure again. But we all have failures in life, and I always saw it is a challenge to bounce back from a setback and go on to greater things."

Among the other "career gurus" addressing students during the four-day event will be Tawfique Abdullah, chairman of Damas which has an international network of 250 gold and jewellery showrooms; Rabea Ataya, the entrepreneur behind, Inc., the Middle East’s leading e-recruiting company, and InfoFort, the region’s first and leading records management company in the Middle East, and Dr. Azad Moopen, who started with a small clinic 18 years back and whose group is now set to grow to 100 healthcare institutions;

Also appearing will be photographer Noorali Rashid, visual recorder of the history of UAE for the last 50 years; Aldrin Fernandes, whose business in Media has grown from one company to nine in the last four years; and Mahmood Panjwani, a young entrepreneur, Chairman & CEO of Infinisim, who was previously co-founder, President and CEO of iManage Inc, a New York Stock Exchange listed company.

Other speakers are Amirali Moorani, a financial controller with 25 years of professional, academic, and business experience and an e-author; and Nafisa Al Mulla, who has more than 29 years of experience in the education industry and last year received the Emirates Businesswoman of the Year Award, and also won the Shaikh Rashid Award for Achievement as well as the Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Award for Achievement.
