The Merian Scout Navigator dispenses with the need for conventional travel guides. This mobile navigation system - on show at CeBIT 2007 - provides users on the move with all the important data they require, whenever and wherever they need it. The multifunctional gadget navigates and informs with its 3D maps, written and spoken messages, images and recorded dialogs.

A competitively priced vehicle tracking system has been developed by a CeBIT 2007 exhibitor from Bulgaria. The system uses free wireless Internet to minimize operating costs. Data is not transmitted via GPRS but always via free Internet connections. The incorporated Wi-Fi modules establish a link to public radio networks (at gas stations or other hotspots) whenever the vehicle is within range of the system.

Navigation is about to become even simpler and even more effective thanks to a new generation of GPS chips. A Swiss exhibitor at CeBIT 2007 is promising start-up times of under a second - much less than the systems currently in use. The chip immediately detects all visible satellites and initiates the positioning process. Even weak signals are detected which means that the system also works in buildings such as airports, shopping malls and train stations.

Further benefits include low energy consumption and a compact format. The chip can be used in everything from PDAs and personal navigation systems to watches, media players and cameras.

Precise locations in a flash. Whereas conventional GPS receivers take at least 30 seconds and often longer to pinpoint locations, A-GPS (Assisted GPS) does so in just a few seconds. The A-GPS service developed by this CeBIT 2007 exhibitor works with both an online and an offline system. The online system supplies the latest live data, while the offline system uses Almanac Plus A-GPS data which is valid for 14 days and stored in the GPS receiver.

A-GPS services have a wide range of applications, for example in personal navigation systems, cell phones or complex system solutions with a large number of terminals.

Watching football in the garden with your friends is now possible without a jumble of cables thanks to the new high-frequency transmission system being unveiled by an exhibitor at CeBIT 2007. In future, this system should also be able to provide live in-flight news. The wireless digital system being showcased at CeBIT 2007 can transmit up to 150 TV shows in DVD or HDTV quality and has a radio connection to the base station within a radius of up to 15 kilometers. The system also includes a broadband Internet connection and a Voice over IP. Pay-per-view, video-on-demand and video surveillance services are also available if required.

One innovation announced by a CeBIT 2007 exhibitor is a mobile phone system intended for anyone without a fixed network connection. Using a GSM gateway, mobile phones are incorporated in the phone system as fully-fledged extensions. The Call Through feature even allows the phone system to accept calls via an SIP provider or connected field offices.

This means that calls can be put through to other members of staff without any problem. Group functions and the automatic distribution of incoming calls (Automatic Call Distribution, ACD) are possible via all mobile extensions. If special company tariffs are used, members of staff can be connected to the phone system free of charge.
