GZ09S makes its debut with a class podium

Following a fraught and varied race, both the new Ginetta-Zytek GZ09S prototypes finished the 1,000km of Catalunya, with a fifth overall and a LMP2 class podium respectively.  There were times when Danny Watts in the Strakka Racing LMP1 car was the fastest on the track. Indeed, during the closing stages of the race, Danny was making up places quickly but just as he was hunting down fourth overall, a race incident caused a full course yellow with Danny badly placed behind the safety car.

At about the same time, Olivier Pla at the wheel of the Quifel-ASM LMP2 GZ09S was rapidly closing in on the class leader. However, he too was to lose valuable time due to a difficulty in leaving the pits and had to settle for second place.

Danny Watts had shown the sheer speed of the Ginetta-Zytek GZ09S when he put the car on pole for today’s race. A difficult start for team mate Peter Hardman initially dropped the car back to fourth.  The car fell even further back, not helped when the second safety car deployment of the race cost the team a whole lap. Nick Leventis, in his first ever race in a Le Mans prototype, drove during the middle stage of the contest but by the time Danny took over the car was some way down the leader board.  His drive in the last hour or so proved just how fast the new GZ09S can be.

In the LMP2 category, the Zytek engined cars were, at one stage, running in second to fourth places.  The fact that the new GZ09S Olivier shared with Miguel Amaral challenged for the class lead and, indeed, led at the start, should have come as no surprise following the Frenchman’s performance in qualifying. However, the GAC Racing team with its Zytek 07S and the WR Salini operation with its Zytek powered car proved just how far they have come since last season with sterling performances that, through incidents, came to nought.

Newcomer to the team Phillip Peter had put the GAC car into a strong position, running as high as second at one point, but a fourth hour accident with a slower GT1 car, when Claude-Yves Gosselin was driving, left the Zytek badly damaged, Not long after the WR retired after a fine run in the early stages of the race by Tristan Gommendy. The GAC team worked on its Zytek to put it back on the track for the last hour with Karim Ojjeh taking over to drive it to an eight in class. The WR was classified as the ninth LMP2.
