SUPERMOTO GRAND-PRIX AUSTRIA MELK Qualifying
|
ROASTED THE RIVALS IN S2, WHILE DELEPINE SNATCHED POLE FROM IDDON IN DIEING MINUTES OF S1
The circuit of Melk was quite hot today and also the S2 top spot seemed to be quite hot. The actual pole sitter was Belgian Eddy Seel with a laptime of 55.276. "In the first free practice we had not a good setting on the machine" explained Eddy Seel. "We worked on it and improved in the second session. We changed some small things for the qualifying: I felt I could improve my laptimes and so I did, clocking the pole. It is good to be on pole but it is tomorrow that matters to me".

Suzuki veteran Eddy Seel
The Suzuki rider had an Aprilia trio behind his shoulders with Bolley, Giraudo and Van Den Bosch. Tomorrow morning they will be the ones enjoying the superpole while red plate holder Adrien Chareyre missed his chance by 29 thousands. That was the gap between him and fourth fastest VDB, who passed the Frenchman in the dieing minutes of the session. Jorge is sixth with Honda, right ahead of Bidart who made to stay on pole for a few minutes at least.Thomas Chareyre was eighth fastest with Boris Chambon right behind him in ninth.
The top ten was closed by Rolland but there were thirteen riders within a second: also Beltrami, Gozzini and Balducci were inside such a short amount of time.
Will there be someone able to run away as a leader tomorrow?
Probably not in the S2 but in the S1 today there were two guys who characterized the session.
Iddon and Delepine were on top of the standings with Iddon owning almost the entire session. He clocked the fastest lap at his eighth attempt and spent a lot of time in the pits thinking about going out again. No one seemed to lap faster than the Brit but at the very end of the session Delepine put together a fantastic lap and beat the young Aprilia rider.
"Iddon did an incredible lap at the beginning of the qualifying" admitted pole sitter Delepine. "Since then I tried my hardest to lap faster than him. It was hard but in my last lap I did a perfect performance, I was relaxed; actually I did a small mistake while coming out of the off road section but I am happy at the end. I was first in both practice sessions and the bike is fit for tomorrow. Myself I am a bit sick at the throat but when I ride I just do not think of it!".
Chris went to the track again after he noticed Delepine was pushing, but he could not improve his time, which was just four thousands slower than Delepine’s one.

Frenchman Delepine being on pole today in Melk
First two riders seemed to be in very good shape but behind them there was Bernd Hiemer, who is going to be ready at tomorrow’s start. Together with them, also Lazzarini will start from the first row, after he got fourth fastest.
Fifth place was a bit of a surprise with Italian Lavetti, who made to leave countryman Girolami behind in sixth.
KTM machines of Fiorentino and Winstanley were seventh and eighth, with Baraccani and Gotz ending the top ten.
The first S2 moto is scheduled at 12.25 am tomorrow while the first S1 moto will be held one hour later at 1.25 pm.
Hiemer and Chareyre hold the red plates but gaps are short in the standings: will they keep their thrones?
