The first six rounds of the Porsche Michelin Supercup 2006 were contested by an all Belgian team. The two Monaco based Belgian drivers Geoffroy Horion and David Dermont were driving for the Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, based Mühlner Motorsport Team in the world’s fastest one-make series and running in the Belgian national colours.
The by D’Ieteren Porsche Import supported project is predominantly financed through funds to be found by the drivers. Dermont and Horion appear now suddenly unable to provide the necessary funding and have thus advised Mühlner Motorsport SPRL that they are both pulling out of the Porsche Michelin Supercup with immediate effect.
Caught completely unawares by this new development, Mühlner Motorsport and their partner D’Ieteren Porsche Import will now have to reconsider their plans for the balance of the season. They will in any case not now be able to contest the next round at Indianapolis.
"We are very annoyed by the behaviour of David Dermont and Geoffroy Horion, breaking an active contract is unfair on all parties involved. We’ll try to find alternatives for the balance of the season and otherwise re-orientate ourselves for 2007. However, the very short-term cancellation by the drivers means that we will have no alternative but to miss the Indianapolis race" said the deeply disappointed team boss Bernhard Mühlner.
The Porsche Michelin Supercup 2006 runs in support of most European Formula 1 Grand Prix weekends in addition to the season start in Bahrain und the United States Grand Prix (Indianapolis 02 July). In total there are 11 meetings with 12 points scoring rounds, the USA Grand Prix weekend having two races.
Porsche AG offers both teams and drivers in the Supercup a fabulous platform at a very high level in Formula 1’s environs. The national Carrera Cups in numerous countries provide a firm foundation in the hierarchy of Porsche’s one-make series’.
"We still envisage with our co-operation with D’Ieteren Porsche Import pursuing a long-term strategy to present Porsche Belgium in Motorsport. The constellation of an All Belgian Team has gained a lot of media recognition"explained Mühlner.
In addition to the Porsche Michelin Supercup, Mühlner Motorsport is also active running Porsche race cars in endurance events. So the 2006 season which opened for the successful Mühlner Motorsport Team with the Supercup race on 12th March in Bahrain will not end until the 24hr race at the same location – the Bahrain 24hrs on 15th – 16th December.
